im going to totally mod the case and put lights in it and maybe reshape it... no harm done and no illegal modifications will be made

Opening the case still voids you warranty though.

No you couldn't. eBay does not allow the sale of modded consoles. They'll shut your auction down if it even mentions the word mod.
Not to mention if you open a console and don't put a mod-chip in, you're an idiot wasting a whole lot of potential for the console, I guarantee the FBI won't get up your ass for it either, they have better things to be doing like illegally wiretapping phones.
