Laptop Privacy

Post by [gx]shadow »

Hey guys. I have a little problem. My high school made us buy laptops from them frosh year. I am a junior now and they made their laptop policy super strict. Now they are doing random laptop checks and we cannot have games, aim, and all that jazz. All I am worried about is the games. Right now I have Halo, Halo CE, and CoD2. I am looking for a program that can hide the folders these games are in and make it so that if they take my laptop, they will not be able to find anything. Any ideas would be great!

Note: I am not looking for anything illegal, illicit, or anything of that nature.

i put all my files on the schools servers, its soo cool every kid in my class playing halo and none of us had to download it haha

but that doesnt help you

you could just make folders rename them to like school work then find a folder locking software and lock it

I'm sure they'd check this, but to hide a folder you can go:
Right click (on the folder) -> Properties and check 'Hidden'
Then to undo it go to the control panel -> folder options and under the view tab check 'Show hidden files and folders'
I'm sure they'd check that though. The only thing I can find on google is stuff to quickly hide windows. Not permanately hide applications.
It would be annoying, but if you have an external hard drive you could store all your applications and folders on that.

Na, the hidden option in the folder properties is the oldest trick in the book. I need something that will hide the folders and make it so if they decide to do a search, the contents of the folder will not show up. I can't use locking software because they will find the folder and make me tell them whats in it and the password. I have an external hard drive, but its a pain to put my games on there and have to put em back whenever I want to play. I miss the good times frosh year when we had halo lan parties all day :(

Most of those programs will be listed in your root drives file registry......

idk for anything for the Program files, but having www.the-cloak.com as your home page covers your tracks on the Internet.

Why hide them? You own the laptop. The school made you buy one for school use, but that doesnt mean you should be limited to what you put on it. Now if the school bought you the laptop, thats a different story. Just argue your case, and if your smart about it, you can get the regulations off so everyone is free to have what they want on thier own laptops. Im sure that will get you some new friends.

The point is, fight the power.

We can't fight the rules. Every year, we get a form with the rules on it and we have to sign it. By doing that, we agree to the rules and the consequences for breaking them. If we don't sign the form, we cannot attend school.

dude wwhat type of school do you go too?!?!

Just go with one of your first ideas and name a folder like "My WordDocs" or something then put all of your school written assignments [hence the WordDocs] into it and then use the program to hide some of your stuff in that folder, because once they see a shitload of documents in there that have to do with the folders subject i doubt theyll search that folder much more.

My friend hid MSN and Messenger Plus in the system folders, took the supposedly smart PC look-after dude months to find it.

Is this a private school?? If not they cant bar you from the school because you dont sign that form. They have to let you in if you are enrolled. They cant revoke enrollment cuz you dont wanna sign a form for a laptop. At my new high school, we get laptops, but if we dont sign the form we dont get them and given a secondary assignment. Kinda like signing the wavier on health class when they get to the sex ed chapters.
