Question about AotCR

I was in AotCR a little while ago and wondered what was at the bottom of the giant shaft in the very begining. When I went down by turning falling damage off There were three grunts ina triangle. Why would these be there?

Yes, there's also 2 dead grunts at the bottom of the shaft and the very beginning of the level. You might be able to see the green glare of their guns from the top.

Oh sorry. I kind of skipped over some of your post because I was tired. I thought you meant the shaft in the middle, when you have the tank and there's some hunters there.
