That is how it is pronounced. It came to as a misspelling of "owned," and with the absence of a vowel, common usage takes the original word, "owned" and simply adds a P to the front, as that is the logical course of action in pronouncing such a word. The word is not "pawned."

Probably because the person pronouncing it wrong lacks and logic and reason. It being a slang word doesn't permit it to be used in a stupid manner. It is treated as any other word, is it not? Ignoring stupid, worthless technicalities, it is used in context as any other word, and should be pronounced properly. Anyone who's going to defend their incorrect pronunciation is just being a hypocrite. They can pronounce it wrong, but they would still be using a word they, themselves, claim is not to be treated as a typical word. Therefore, they should not be using it, by their own logic.
Use the logical and reasonable pronunciation or don't use the term. Arguing about it is completely idiotic.
It is "powned."
The original word is "owned."
You draw the "o" in "powned" from the original word, "owned."
If you're saying "pawned," you're drawing a vowel from no logical source whatsoever, you're just saying it however you want because you think you can (But as explained, defending that usage is hypocritical).
If you're saying "pawned," your logic would dictate the word is "pewned," "piwned," "puwned," and "pywned" as well.
Reason, logic, intelligence, and every other cognitive ability dictates the pronunciation of such a term. If you are incapable of using said cognitive abilities, that is a personal problem you must come to terms with on your own, and not try to defend your lack of such to those who have them.

I thought pawned meant something like "He was just killed off like a pawn (easiest pieces in chess)", sort of thing. I dunno >_>
He got mad at me because he was extremely into his video games, and wasn't in the mood for something to go slightly wrong in his gaming terminology shenanigans for the day.

Not really, no. "Pwn" is an error that was adapted as a misspelling without logic dictating its spelling. The pronunciation is dictated by solely logic, as it has no definite correctness. The situation really isn't the same. Technicalities in logic are irrelevant here, as this entire discussion is based on real-world logic, not technical logic. That's the entire point I've been getting at. Obviously the stupid technicalities like "wel wtf it r not a wurd" are common sense, but that is not what we are discussing here. Your question is posed on the basis of such a technicality, where it is based entirely on what could be, and not what actually is. "Pawned" won't become the standard, and thus a "what if" question is useless.Ombre wrote:However, if "pwned" came from "owned" by just a simple misspelling or other error, shouldn't "pawned" be able to come from "pwned" from the widespread error of mis-pronunciation?
Ugh. This whole God damn argument is retarded. It is "powned." Logic, reason, intelligence, and any acceptable level of brain functions would tell you this. I'm done with this stupid technicality crap. Common sense, it shouldn't require this elaborate of a damn explanation for people to grasp such a basic concept. It comes from fucking "owned," so give me any damn reason at all why there would be an "a" in its pronunciation. [MOAR SWEARING MEH MEH MEH]
No. The word comes as a misspelling of "own." It does. That is true. That is its origin. The chess analogy is something the people pronouncing it wrong latched onto as a way to defend their illogical claims. If you are referring to the word "pwn," it is pronounced with an "o." If you want to make up your own word with an "a" in it, go ahead, but "pwn" is not that word.JK-47 wrote:I thought pawned meant something like "He was just killed off like a pawn (easiest pieces in chess)", sort of thing. This has been fun. I think Halomods is the only place where such an elaborate discussion could brew from such a simple thing.
Rant: I must awaken at 6am, so I can't prolong this argument any longer for me own pleasure.
I know Tural is right, but if I were ever to use such words in a serious manner, I'd defiantly go with "owned" or "pawned" for the simple reason that they sound less stupid than "pwned."
