Actually, it's not "the new thing", it's more of a year or two ago, and people usually call kids like you "emo" when no real scene kids live around you, they think long hair going diagonally across the eyes automatically makes you "emo". The kids in junior high who made an attempt to have the thick glasses have moved on, the "new thing" is scene, which includes less long hair, as some of the brosephs have buzz cuts, gigantic gauges, basketball shorts, baseball tee's, Vans, and no thick rimmed glasses on the guys, and on the girls, large, voluminous layered hair which is occasionally dyed blond. If you look at lots of the hardcore bands now days, lots of them are getting buzz cuts.
Also, mullets. On boys and girls.

I was referring to the "kids" who are oblivious to the names they are throwing around, not kids in general.
