I don't see why the United States wasn't allowed to execute him. If we had been, he would have been given the lethal injection. Then his death wouldn't have been so publicized. And it's not like little kids in Iraq have containers of lethal drugs to play with.

It wasn't their call. he did not commit any crimes against the U.S. , Therefore, we have no jurisdiction over him. He committed crimes against his own country, Iraq's New legal system had jurisdiction over him, after we handed him over to them. We only did because there are some spiteful people that'd want to kill him before he could be tried.
