Water confirmed on Mars
Mars has pretty much no atmosphere. But lucky us, I have an atmospheric tool kit with me at all times. As for the temperature, just bring a lot of heavy coats, and maybe a lifetime supply of oxygen tanks, and we'll be set :D
Really, though, public space missions just came out, I seriously doubt that even if a human made it to mars, it wouldn't be in our lifetime that people would start living on it. You don't even see hotels on the moon yet.

it really depends on how we colonize it. if we put the time and money into conditioning the atmosphere and environment, it might not be for another 500 years.
but if we begin missions shortly to build partially/mostly underground structures, i can see a sizable base being finished within our lifetime. maybe not with pilgrim presence, but once a structure is there, it's only a matter of time.

so, they've discovered something that could be more provocative, and appear to be briefing the administration. it's anyone's guess as to what it is until they release the information, but it looks like they're being awfully careful about it... i hope they have a press conference soon.

Hm, well, the soil has already shown the minimal level of nutrients needed to grow asparagus, so all that's needed is to grow an atmosphere. That takes a while.GametagAeonFlux wrote:I'd imagine the discovery has something to do with carbon being found in the soil or something. Seeing any sort of flora or fauna would be incredibly awesome, but I sincerely doubt it'd be something that major.

Yeah, pretty sure they found ice, or melted ice, or ice with water under it.
Also, hasn't anyone heard of the technological singularity? We'll be on Mars before the end of the century.
Also, WATER: CONFIRMED FOR BRAWL.

It's a hypothetical situation, not a proven formula or anything. Also, that just has to deal with ultra-smart AIs and computers, it doesn't necessarily mean anything about space travel.G.I.R. wrote:Also, hasn't anyone heard of the technological singularity? Derp, I meant Moore's Law; though the Technological Singularity applies in some respects.GametagAeonFlux wrote:It's a hypothetical situation, not a proven formula or anything. Whoops, Moore's law only applies to:G.I.R. wrote:Derp, I meant Moore's Law; though the Technological Singularity applies in some respects.GametagAeonFlux wrote:

while moore's law is exciting, you have to consider murphy's law as well. technology should develop at a near-exponential pace, but things like economics and politics will put a bit of delay between what moore's law saws what will happen, and what really will. that's why i think it's a bit optimistic to say we'll be on mars within the century. although, i am assuming "on mars" means colonization, not just a manned mission.
