I actually just had my 360 brick on me, and I had to call into 1800-4MY-XBOX.
They have some automated service now that uses speech recognition. I have used such services before, and they have all worked remarkably well.
However, 'Sam' (Microsoft Sam, anyone?..) decided that my voice sucked the big one too much to recognize what I said.
"FREAKING GET ME A PERSON," was the last thing I said before it timed out and said, "Let me get someone else to help you with." ( -_- )
So I then got transfered over to Shinequa, or however the hell you spell black names (Sorry, but you people do spell names in a messed up fasion..), who could fluently talk Jive, while I can't even understand it.
So I finally got used to listening to her, and she took me through the steps of unplugging the 360, taking off the HDD, then plugging it back in and powering it on.
Still red lights, so she started a service request for me while she talked to me.
She asked my what I had plugged into the wall socket and I said, "I have my 360, receiver, and sub woofer all plugged into a power strip, although I only have the power strip plugged into the wall; there is nothing in the other outlet, so there is definitely enough electric current for that to power all three devices throughly."
(Which is entirely correct. I don't feel like listing it out, but trust me, there is DEFINITELY enough power there to power all three devices plus some.)
She then turns it around and says, "By plugging your 360 into a power strip, it voids the warranty."
I sat there for a second, and started to get really pissed off.
Luckily, either she was lying, or stupid (probably both), but she continued on with the repair claim.
So I tried to get onto a different subject so she didn't realize her error, when she asked when I had purchased the 360. I told her it was February 28th, because that's when my Live account renews.
"So since it's been under a year, my warranty should still be good."
"Actually, it's 90 days."
Now, I have worked at Circuit City for about 3/4 of a year, and have processed multiple claims about broken 360's, and every dimwit I have talked to at Xbox support, has always accepted the year warranty.
I was about to bust a nut, when she asks for my serial number. I tell her, and again, either in her error, or stupidity, she's all, "Looks like your console is actually still within warranty, so let's finish this claim."
I am now waiting for my little box to arrive to send my 360 in.
The weird thing is, it's been working fine for about a year, February to current, and yet it just now bricked.
Oh well, at least the warranty is extended from this little escapade.

No, the update was working great.
My Xbox would just freeze three times in a row, and then work on the fourth whenever it started up.
That's why I was on the phone with Xbox support in the first place, when the RLoD reared its ugly head.
I don't think it's the update, but I can't say for sure.
However, mine is almost a year old, so I bet it's much safer to buy a more recent 360 than a year old one.
So no worries Scotty.
