That kinda reminds me yesterday, my Chemistry teacher and i were talking about atoms, and how if they were mostly just empty space, how come we are able to stand on them?Aumaan Anubis wrote:I stumped my AP Physics teacher!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!
But of course, then he wasn't able to answer my question
that was a fun conversation, we eventually agreed that because all atoms have electrons in them and like charges repel each other, the electrons in the atoms in our feet are repelling/being repelled by the electrons in the atoms atoms in the ground.
just our theory though, can't be sure

No. That's not really something for debating, that's just incorrect. It's not a theory, it's common sense. Atoms bind together, that is what forms molecules and the like. These bonds, in addition to the matter, is why you can stand on it, that is what everything is. Atoms contain matter, regardless of them being "mostly empty space." Due to the unfathomable amount of atoms beneath, and within you, you are standing upon nearly solid matter. It's not because you're being repelled, it's because there's a shit load of matter there. If you were the size of an atom, it would be a different story, but you are not. I'll not get into how underqualified that teacher may be if they came to that agreement with you.AbeFroman wrote:That kinda reminds me yesterday, my Chemistry teacher and i were talking about atoms, and how if they were mostly just empty space, how come we are able to stand on them?

i think i get it now, so were standing on atoms because whatever "space" is taken up in the atom is bunched together forming more of a "chunk" of matter, and less of the empty space that makes up the atom? or did i interpret that wrong?Tural wrote:No. That's not really something for debating, that's just incorrect. The distance between atoms is so incredibly small compared to a person that it isn't even worth considering, because there is no occasion when that distance will ever, for any reason, be significant. The gaps between atoms are simply too small for the bound atoms to pass through. It's more that the charges holding atoms together prevent them from passing through, not that the other atoms are repelling them.

thx, tural, so its more of a mix of what i said first and what i said second?
and dissolution, he didn't exactly say i was right. like i said, it was more just "our little theory", but Tural appears to know more than my Chem teacher.
edit: pretty much tells me that if Tural WANT's to answer something, he will answer it, it isn't a matter of can or cannot for him

yeah, but you said something about charges having some part in keeping you standing in the post before your newest one. so right now I just have one question:
Do you mean that just the atoms being close together, not leaving enough space for your foot's atoms to pass through because of the charge that brings 2 atoms together that is keeping you standing?
or that it is also that they are in a close enough proximity that the charges don't do all the work, but help in keeping you up (example, you have a magnet, north pole facing up and you drop another magnet, South Pole facing up, down on the existing magnet, the one you drop is repelled, but still falls to the ground
but you have 2 magnets [both with north poles facing up] you drop a third magnet, with south pole facing up, in between those, then it should bounce up)?
edit: sorry, off-topic, this is the happiness thread, not the atomic structure thread, i just got Force unleashed and it effing pwns face
