I planned on playing rock, mostly. Metal, that sort of stuff. So obviously, I know that I plan on playing on the electric, I'm just having trouble finding a good brand for a good price.

I also heard someone mention costco? We have that, but as I've been told, (by teh interwebs) never to buy guitars from a store like wal mart, target, costco, because they can't really provide guitar service, and the quality probably isn't as good.

Andrew, I've heard from many that the stratocaster is a great guitar, what was wrong with it?

It is expected, and demanded.

A squire strat is a good learning guitar. The way I see it is that you could purchase this, or you could stick with the acoustic, get good, be certain you love guitar, and then invest in a higher end guitar.

I'm talking about Squire Strat. The one I have is about 5 years old. Squire makes cheap guitars for beginners. Just as berenger (spelling...) makes cheap equipment for beginners (or people without huge wallets). The Squire would be good to start with, I'm just having problems with mine.

By the way, I recommend starting with acoustic if you want to learn chords. Acoustic's strings are spread out so the fingers have some room, making it easier to play chords. Electric, being more for soloing/playing fast, has smaller frets (I believe), and less space between strings.

Yeah, I'd go with the Squire Strat. I've had mine for a year. It serves me well.

Given me nothing but problems. Plus, recently my amp died. Good thing it was cheap. (Well, compare it to other music items, and it's cheap.)
Ive had one for a long time and it still works Fine. everything but my friend did manage to break the whammy bar by messing with it but i dont care.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a First Act guitar of ANY KIND. I would honestly advise you to go with WaywornMmmmm's advice. Do some songs acoustically first, so that you get the feel for the guitar and you know you want to pursue it.

Yeah, I'd stick with his advice aswell. My first bass was a Squire P-Bass. I've had that for 5 years aswell. Last year around October, I went from the cheap amp that came with the bass, to a Mesa Boogie head with a Mpeg cab. Got discounted, still cost alot. Now, I'm going from the P-Bass, to an Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray.
