I don't think Lasers of sorts are out of the question entirely, in the 60's there were lasers that could supposedly destroy ICBM's before they reached their targets... and that was over 40 years ago.

last i knew as long as the nukes blew up at a certain point away from the earth the planets magnetic field will take care of the radiation.
the sun chucks out plenty more radiation than a nuke and or multiple nukes would any day.

We have that in development right now. It's a laser mounted on the inside of a 747, and it can swivel to take out any missile (or similar object) in it's range with a LAZAR.
