rth and freezing

I have been looking far and wide for a means to get real time halo working. But it seems like no matter how many things i try there is always another obstacle. I started with my 1.4 xbox, an xecuter3 modchip, 80 gb hard drive and purchased copy of halo 2 and the map packs. From there, i got the xbox neighborhood running and slowly began to piece together how to do this.

Once i could connect to my xbox while playing a game i opened entity (i have currently tried 1.3.6 and 1.3.9) I can Connect to my xbox succesfully. Awesome! ok, so now all i have left to do, is try a simple meta edit and test this thing out! On occasion, the first meta edit will work. But after 1 or 2 changes, or i move to a different tag, it stops working.

Ok, well, there are other editors out there and i have read around different forums of people having problems with finding the particular version of entity that works for rth. So i go and try the first publicly released standalone rth application. I open entity, make a change, save the tag, even sign the map and close it (although entity closes maps when not writing) just to be safe. I type in my xbox's ip and click my tag to change it. it says "poking meta" and has a loading bar. It freezez while its loading (expected i suppose) then unfreezing for just .5 seconds before completely freezing. damn.

On to the second standalone rth application http://forums.halomods.com/viewtopic.php?t=79712
I tried connecting to the xbox, but all that happened was a frozen xbox

I would really appretiate anyone reading this to consider the amount of work i have put in so far. I simply can't find the answer using available resources. I tried the IRC but everyone was idle and in and out over a period of around 20 hrs. I have looked all over as many halo 2 forums as i could find for information. gathering bits and pieces from halomods and other sites. But i simply can't find the answer to my problem posted on a public website. I have really reached the end of my abilities to solve this.

Thank you,
Vinney

There is no public application that can properly poke tags. Entity can do it, but it can only do a few. Most tags you try and poke with it can freeze.

Almost all, if not all, Entity RTH versions work poorly and I would recommend against using them as they are notorious for not poking meta correctly and causing freezing.

Standalone RTH seems to work a treat, but I believe some of the plugins it uses are incorrect: such is life. It works by sampling the tag that you select in the list and recording that meta, then when you press poke and it compares the cached version of the meta it has with the new meta from the map and pokes the differences. So it's important to have a tag selected before you make changes to it.

AKA: Select tag in Standalone RTH -> Change tag meta in Entity -> Press Poke

Also, Standalone RTH seems to have a bug when connecting to a debug xbox and will sometimes show a balloon with an error stating that it failed to connect or some just thing, ignore the error and juts use it as normal, chances are it connected fine.

Also, if you MUST use Entity over the Standalone RTH, use 1.3 Beta or 1.5 UE as those are the only ones that worked for me. But I still recommend using Standalone RTH.

It doesn't use plugins. If the program you are using it with has incorrect plugins then that's the problem. You don't have to use entity, if you prefer to use another program that closes the stream when it's not reading/writing to the file you can use that with standalone RTH also.

I'll have to work on that sometime, I'm not sure if it's a problem with the YeloDebug.dll or with code. There's a good chance it's something I did, since I didn't extensively test it(I barely tested at all actually, just a couple pokes on my box).

Want to try rewriting it on Windows 7? It doesn't work on here either.

Thank you all for your input!

It has really shed some light on my situation. I would also like to thank all of the modders working behind the scenes to make things like this happen. I don't much expect you to constantly be updating your work, or telling everyone whats going on, or even sharing it. I know that nobody wants 500 standalone RTH's like we saw with map signers (ugh!!!! ). I hope that sometime soon, somehow, i will be able to perform this, or help someone else do it.

It does seem as though RTH is not a feasible option for someone without the knowledge to make it happen on their own (me). So thanks to the people working to make it work for the rest of us newbs out of the kindness (or curiosity) of your heart.

Thank you all,
Vinney

If I get the time and desire to code, I might work on that.
