How does autofire work?

When I set the firing type of a gun to autofire, it behaves strangely. The triggers don't work. The gun fires once when I switch to the other gun in my inventory. If I die, a few seconds later, the gun fires one shot. Sometimes, if I approach my old corpse with the autofire gun nearby (from the previous life), it will shoot again, but only if I toss a grenade at it, look at it cross-eyed while the wind is blowing, and only on Tuesday or Sunday. Otherwise, nothing.
In other words, once it's on the ground, I have no idea when the thing is going to fire. Is there a way to adjust the autofire behavior? Please note that I'm not talking about automatic fire, in which the gun fires repeatedly while the trigger is pressed.
Is this the same effect by which enemies in the SP game fire a few last wild shots as the Spirit Horse takes them to the Other Side? Or is that a script of some kind? I always wondered about that.
I'm wondering what the H-E-double-hockeysticks autofire is good for. I envisioned a weapon that, when equipped, would fire continuously at its maximum rate until it had exhausted its ammo, or until it was swapped to a different gun.
What guns in the game use autofire? It seems worthless.
