Download a program called Hex Workshop. Then use it to open your map, and search for the strings you're trying to replace. Once the program finds those strings, simply type over them with what you want. However, you cannot exceed the number of characters in the existing string. Depending on the name of your new weapon, you might want to replace a weapon with a longer name so you have more characters to work with. For example, "magnum" only has six letters, but "rocket launcher" has 15, including the space. If you want a string to be shorter than the existing string, replace the extra letters with spaces.

In that case you would also have to fix the file's index, which manually will quickly become
very tedious..

That's not what I meant.
In the above example, what I meant was to apply the weapon mods to the rocket launcher instead of the magnum, so that the modded weapon will be associated with the rocket launcher's strings. Then all you have to do is change those.
When it comes to hex, I would not presume to do anything more complex than a marginally intelligent monkey could handle...
Hats off to data abstraction, and the people who implement it.

I would just use that sweet Prey Program Blu, (thats the text ones name isn't it) Thats what I use. Just download it, open that map then all the text loads, find the weapon and change it, make sure it less or same charcters

Alius bos.
However it may have trouble if the map is not clean. Just change the names before you start modding it.

Or use Entity 1.4's Unicode editor.

I find that XVI works the best, haven't encountered any troubles as of yet.
