skinning tips?

hey i'am a newbie at skinning and my friend and i are working for a grungy skin for midship. I would like a little advice on how all you pros out there work out whats best for the textures.
right now im even having trouble which textures are which XD (cant wait for prophet to come out) so i would like some hints/advice from the wise

But for now, look in the bsp viewer, then just try and find the bitmaps you need.

try walking around the map your skinning wile your skinning it, it helps to see in game that your extracting and re skinning. it helps me a lot
