Will this work?

I'm folowing this tutorial and wanted to know if the model has to be perfect as in you can't create two parts of it, just attach them, and go through with it? or does it need to be "tool" approved as in Halo CE where NO open edges, NO overlapping faces, etc. Can anyone tell me this?
