Mod of the Month Discussion

Well hello there fellow Halo 2 modders!
Being a new member of staff for Halomods, I thought I would bring change to the place. Currently these changes are only planned for Halo 2 skins, as that section to me is a very special place, which will only get better with time.

But that doesn't mean I've left the rest of you halo 2 modders behind, I don't really have too many plans yet, however, one that I was thinking over is something a lot of you may like (after all the threads I've seen)...

So without further talk, I thought a visual representation would be best:
Image

Yes, you saw correctly, I am indeed considering if I should bring Mod of The Month back, it brought people together and helped people become motivated to do the extra step for mods.

So what exactly are your views on mod of the month?
do yo want it back?
Do you want the same rules as last time? If no, what would you like to see changed?
Do you think its needed?
What kind of rewards would you like to see put in place for the winner?

Let's put it this way, I'm not totally into Mod of the month, but if you guys want it, if you would work harder to make an orsm mod to try and win this, if there will be no flaming and all the crap from previous Mod of th months, then I will be more than happy to make it...So in a way, you guys are trying to convince me that I do Mod of the Month once again.

One more thing, if this does indeed go ahead and you are succesful at convincing me, then I will make a "best mod of the previous 6 months", so as to not leave other modders out (so you can choose the favourite of the year)

The main problem here is the size of mods these days. Do you really think that having 60mb mods hosted elsewhere is something actually fair for users? Not only are you forcing people to download massive files from ad and virus filled sites, but the download may not always be available. Hosting on halomods seems to be the only viable option here, as its guareenteed to be less confusing, the link will always remain, no ads, no waiting and a fast download. What is your opinion on this? It is a really big issue and I can't see MoTM coming back if everything is hosted offsite at random places with large files.

My thoughts on the issue is that we somehow make a solid repository somewhere that contains all the patches for SP levels. What does this do? For one, it allows people to easily get SP map conversions without the hassle of converting them, it also means that we CAN have 10mb files hosted on halomods. How? users provide a link to the repository, and then make a patch off the converted map. This results in a few things, things are easy to patch as its always just one certain patch, no varying base map files, just the one kind of level to patch over. It allows the after patches to be uploaded to halomods and thus be in the serenity repository. Its a lot smaller hassle than offsite hosting.
I would love to see your views on this bit. Please comment if you can (say if you didnt understand)

Thanks

I think this is a great idea. I would love to see Mod of the Month back. I think the rules from last time work (If I remember correctly). Hopefully this will bring more great modding maps from some great modders. As for rewards, I'm not exactly sure... I think the title "Mod of the Month Winner" would be good enough...not really anything else that would be a suitable prize that I can think of.
I dont think it'd really work to host large patches on HaloMods, maybe find a download site to host that is easy to upload to and download from, and make sure all competitors upload to that site.
Sorry if my words/sentences are messed up (I'm really really tired.)

Edit: Scotty, that sounds like a good idea. A title and an automatic entry into Outstanding. That would also get more mods in there and (hopefully) make those forums more active.

If I get enough responses on this I could attempt to organise a usergroup like tjc2k4 did which comes with a title under your name (like my "staff") and also sticky/outstanding mod it.

So what exactly are your views on mod of the month?

I always thought it was a good thing in that it motivated people to work harder on their mods and spend more time on them.

Do you want it back?
Of course. :p

Do you want the same rules as last time? If no, what would you like to see changed?
I think new rules and guidelines are in order, as modding has changed quite a bit since MOTM was a regular and popular thing.

Do you think its needed?
No, but it would definetly bring some life back into the downloads forum, I haven't seen a mod worth downloading and putting on my 'box in quite a while (excluding Nightwinder 2 and Night Ops).

What kind of rewards would you like to see put in place for the winner?
Maybe a new MOTM emblem? Or a super-awesome Scotty-sig? :p

I would love to see MOTM but I'm not really a modder... I'm a creationist and a skinner. Still I think it would be great.

A person wrote:for the MOTM thing i think it should be ok if we upload to like our own sever so its just a direct link download with no ads and vruises would that be ok? i
No, I think either we have a repository for converted mods ie, just a base converted new mombassa, which the patch is made from.
Or we organise 1 place for all mods to be uploaded...Like our own server somewhere...Not rapidshare or anything poor like that.

It would be highly appreciated if someone would supply their server or something for MOTM submissions and MOTM mods to be uploaded to

This would be great to have back. But look at the download section...It's been bone dry with mods. Not too many people are modding anymore.

But you never know, this type of thing might bring people back or new people with great ideas.

Viva la MOTM.

MOTM is a good idea, it creates a competition between members but it's a motivation.

Maybe just one place for the MOTM is not enough, you should make 1st,2nd and 3rd place for MOTM, depeding if there were much mods or not in a month.

I would love to see it back also, it sounds like a great idea!

As for a reward, an Emblem sounds nice same with the MOTM Title. Hell if this comes back, I might even make a Mod, something I haven't done in too long.

Anything that motivates people to make new mods is a good idea.

Word. MotM is just a good idea in general. It gives something to look forward to in the following months. I'm sure most people already come to halomods in the mindset that there won't be much that's new or exciting here. So if MotM was back, then there might be a little more excitement. This would even bring more traffic to the skins section...if skins were aloud in the contest...and the pictures section. Seeing how, most like to post pictures of upcoming mods in there anyways. this would just add more. Halomods would only benefit from this.

Scotty, I suggest you sticky this and change the topic name so that people understand what it is, it seems like this hasn't gotten the full attention that it should.

-I was hoping that simply because I posted, it would gather full attention of the whole userbase of halomods...Then I realised I'm not that orsm ;p

I've given skinners the benefit of having competitions a few times now (still goin strongish ;))

I'll have to think over some possible rules later...Unfortunatley I was silly and posted this at a time when I'm doin a lot of work for exams :P give me maximum 2 weeks and I'll be posting with some fine rules for you to see whats what...

As for judges, nah, I like the traditional voting system for MoTM, you post your mod of choice and a reason why
