Please critique my 'future map design idea'

firstly, im really sorry if this is in the wrong area, i couldnt see it fitting anywhere else really... i will get it moved/move it myself if it causes any problems but...

i am going to make a mod soon, when ive sorted out my xbox and stuff and so i quickly drew up some of the plans for what it will do:

as you can see, my drawing skills arent brill, but this is a rough sketch as nothing is yet final.

features of the map:

there will be a train of death (from terminal) on there, the train will be activated by the pressing of the button near the tracks. the shield area is a little 'revenge' area where if someone you see goes into the area and you hit said train button, a shield pops up encasing them so they cannot escape... and then yes, the train comes and revenge is done.

There is also a highway that passes around the map and tunnels through the area under the large base. it also connects up to the top of the tower on relic, where there will be about 4 warthogs or so waiting to get driven. there will also be an elevator on the side of the relic tower to get up easily

the banshee bay is out at sea about 10-15 metres from land, like an oil rig. there will be either 1 or 2 banshees there... maybe a pelican

please tell me what you think and what i could do to improve this or any tips or tricks. i am going to be a newbie modder but i have had some experience in languages and most of the stuff here can either be copied from other sources on the game or (like the highway and remodel of some of the map) done myself using 3D programs which i am experienced in

Pretty good idea, but adding that much will probably result in alot of lag but it sounds like a good idea

sounds good, but how you gonna do the whole shield popping up and the train thing, those sound a bit difficult, i'm pretty sure the shield popping up thing could be possible, but i just don't see the train working out all that well, unless you want it to be a strait track

PS: when i first started modding halo i had this extremely awesome idea for a zanzibar mod, but most of the stuff i had in mind wasn't possible, and actually now that i think about it recently became possible, but what i'm saying is before you get your hopes up for an awesome map, i'd look around at some other maps and look to see what you know is possible and what you will be able to do, nothing's worse then having these awesome idea's for maps that are gonna be the cornerstone, only to realize you won't be able to do it

Remodeling maps in Halo 2 is currently impossible. Also, the train is part of the BSP from Terminal. Lastly, it look like a bad idea in general.

actully if you look at it the train on terminal is acutlly curved a little so it might work
but your problem is that i believe that it runs on scripts and you need the train to end outside the map

Most of this is not possible so just abandon your ideas and try to think of something more realistic.

yeh, i get what most of you are saying... hmm, i thought you could edit the maps using 3DS or gmax or something?
as for the shield, there will be the shield when deactivated (just the shield posts there and the shield is invisible and non-solid) and the activated shield (where the shield is a bluey shield colour and solid)

for the train button, well, i will look at the source for terminal and find the train because in that code (either terminal or the train, and most likely terminal) there is the bit about creating the train... so therefore i copy that i paste it onto the activated button code


i know i will be a complete noob, so i am going to start out easy with skin mods and progress to models+scripts and other coding. one idea i have is a new weapon, which is basically a land mine which is deployed and then after 3 seconds if anyone stands on it, it will detonate (using collision events from the rocket launcher rocket)

this will be very much trial and error, but most of what i want to do is already there on the game

The mine idea actually might be possible it's defidently something i've never seen before, but it might be possible with scripts, but that sort of use of scripts might be inefficient and lag the game, i've actually got some ideas to test this sort of use of scripts but i'd give that one a go if i was you

Its good and all but this is going to be hard. How much experiance do you have with modding? Do you think that you can pull someting off like this?

i have had 3-4 years experience with 2D animation and 2-3 years of 3D animation, and in that time ive been modelling (as best i can) in 3DS max 8... but i didnt get that atall, and now i am doing point edit modelling in anim8or, which is freeware, quite basic, but good for just modelling

i was also trying to take up Blender, but the program isnt working for me

just get the containment bridge, and make it look like a train track( i dont know how to do that just yet,) and make sure it is as long as it, for the phisychs model (or whatever its called) and spawn it through itmc's

a train is easy to make. u can use the hanging beam from headlong as the track then use the train from terminal and turn it into active scenery.

Edit: But active scenery goes in a straight line so your track cant curve so idk and the high way use a bridge or containment gate but u need to get entity and make sure the version you have has bsp viewer. wow my edits longer than my first post lol.

for the highway, well, i think i will wait until i find a good way of actually editing the map in a 3D program (such as gmax or whatever) i havent really thought of the other things and they pretty much rely on editing the map as the train will be slightly in the ground so it stays level through the whole of the map

It doesn't look like something that would be made on relic. sorry but keep the trains to terminal. I don't really like the idea.

I think what he means is Human arcitectureor whatever you want to call out doesnt go with Forerunner ones.
I.E. why would there be a human train on Halo? And also the fact that Relic is a small island in the middle of nowhere.

He could make it look like it wasn't in the middle of nowhere and make it look like it was on on earth.

Besides, it doesn't have to make sense.

I like the idea, but i agree that it could have some lag.

yeh, lag seems to be the greatest problem for the map i agree... i guess you could say that the humans are invading the forerunners' structures and taking them for themselves... IE, the warthogs and linking highway and also the new train route, if you think that it is too clashy with the forerunners and humans im sure i can do a little bit of retexturing and earth/humanfy it up a bit
