ScottyGEE's next skinning competition

Post by ScottyGEE »

Well, I soon will be hosting another one of my unnoficial skinning competitions, so that people can see what fun it is to skin and for people to get recognised with their skinning abilities...And so you guys can brag about winning but hey ;)

Well anyway, the purpose of this thread is to really see what I should be doing for the contest...
I have a few ideas:
1) continue with the current skinning competition style, choose a level, you guys skin it, the best skin wins through mine and a select few others' opinions.
2) I give you guys a theme (eg snow just to be a cliche'), and you guys skin any level, vehicle, weapon, or bipd to suit that theme... So people could enter their skins as a snowy zanzibar or a snowy coagulation...Or just make a snow hog...Choice is yours.
3) A combination of 1 and 2, this one is a level AND a theme, which reduces variety to a degree but will really showcase one's skinning talents as the judges can easily see where one skinner effectivley does something and where another doesn't...This idea however is the most restricting on creativity.

The main rules will stay the same:
No ripped content
No weapon or effect mods
Sound injection is allowed
BSP tweaks are allowed (you can add rain, snow or water)
Any bitmap (except for effect bitmaps) are allowed to be skinned.
Any others?

I'm thinking March 12th is a good time for the contest to end, it gives ample time for skinners to think of an idea and to excecute it well.

As for prizes, I have arranged for a pretty kool prize for this comp, I will also design the winner and runners up A sig+avatar to showcase their positioning in the comp so you can have even MORE bragging rights ;)

So what are your thoughts/views on this contest? Anything you'd like to see changed? Just tell me and I'll consider it...
If all goes well and you like the idea, I will probably post the competition within a day or two.

One other thing, what's your view on letting ME skin in this competition? Of course, I will dissallow myself from judging my own skin but do you feel it is unfair?

I think judges should be able to skin as well in this one scotty.

I want to do both.... >_<

I think we should try theme, but maybe just restrict it to level skin, because a biped or vehicle skin would have to be outstanding to even have a chance of winning the competition and would make it harder to compare the skins and decide upon a winner. Another alternative option is running three seperate or two seperate competitions.. E.G. Level Skin comp and Vehicle/biped skin comp. Lastly I think users should get a maximum of one entry if it is themed and two if it is levels.

Anyways, there is my two cents worth hope you guys give out some more creative things too. :D

I like the "here is a theme and go do it" kind of thing. Sounds really awsome, and makes people think ;).

I agree with SingingBlaze about no bipd/vehicles as well.

Edit: The only problem is it is kind of unfair considering that not all people have the ability to edit bumps :? .

Yeah, thats a fair point...I will disallow those people from using custom bumps then As thats like me using a custom bsp and skinning that while you guys can't do that.

That's true to. Although my way of looking at that is this, if you are a true winner, you won't NEED bumps. All the more reason showing you are a good skinner.

Edit* I'm down for this one Scotty. Just need to know the theme and details :D

Theme should be announced in the next couple of days...It won't be snow... I'm sick of snow mods that require just a few bitmaps :S

But they don't show up as well...
To be fair, I think I should disallow it...However, I go by the overall feel of a skin, whilst the bumps can add to that feel, the atmosphere and feel is created by the actual visual bitmaps...

I don't like the whole "only this map can be done" style, could you give us maybe 3 maps we can choose from? :)

Don't disallow bump maps, just restrict the format that can be used.

Easily said, from a person who already knows how to bump map. XD

Although, I do believe that custom bumps should be allowed. If this is a skinning contest, Skin=Bitmaps+Bump Maps, right?

Even though some people still don't know how to make custom bumps, that's no reason to limit the contest. Lack of Knowledge=2 Lazy 2 Learn!?!, mb?
I really don't want to see a new skin, made by some respected skinner, be ruined, due to a lack of new bumps. :?

Just to clarify why doesn't the person who programmed the app to inject bumps just release it. I am not sure why it is so secret now. We should all get to enjoy the fun.

That is a DXT3 bump map... so just allow them, it's knowledge... nothing special is needed as such.

Anyways, lets not turn this into a big bump mapping debate...

I'll probably enter =)

I think, if you make a skinning contest, everyone have his own knowledge on skinning, right?

But beeing able to make custom bumpmaps and inject it is not "skinning knowledge" it's a "tool" so you could post a link to tutorial so that way everyone is supposed to have the SAME "tools".

Constest sounds cool, if i have the time i will make a skin ^^ now i am wainting for the theme

Remember guys, in the end it is up to ScottyGee and I have great faith in him to do whatever he thinks to be fair.

Lostwithin, that should be ok because from the looks of it we will probably be going with a theme so you can choose any map you want. :D

I think you should just stick with the past competition rules, AKA, just pick a level. If you pick a theme, many people will be discouraged from entering. Just PM me when the contest starts  I definnately want to enter this one.
