Rendering

can anyone help me make my renders look more real?
I was looking through the renders galellyery and the thread, and i heard the term cube mapping. What is it?

Also the reflections never look right. how do i fix it?
if someone could direct me to a detailed tut, it would be great. ( i already saw the original how to render thread.)

also, for extracting the bitmaps, they never look as high quality as everyone elses (yes i understand the mip maps thing) am i taking the textures from the wrong spot?

PS, yes i relize this is ther wrong spot, but it seems like no one is at the help desk
