Weapon poly limit

I'm thinking of starting to model now that proper UVs are now here and im just wondering what is a good poly limit for weapons or anything for that matter?

in halo 2 it doesn't matter. Although it might lag a little. I say just have fun! Just don't go over like 10k if possible lol.

how much would you need to make a map laggy? I have a sweet vehicle model I made, and it's currently 5k ish, but I don't have the polugons in triangles, so it will go up to 10k. if I have two of these in a close-range heated battle, will it lag?
