Heat distortion
Heat distortion
So I've been thinking about how to best go about making a large lava field in a map, and it occurs to me that a heat distortion would look awesome. I've been looking at some effects and it seems that the steam effe from the hvacs could do nicely if it could just me given a bump map and have the actual steam removed. Is this something I could do, and if so how would I go about it? Also, would it be possible to make the effect much bigger? I suppose there could just be a ton of normal ones in a map, but it'd be easier to do if I could just place a bunch of big ones. The same principle could be applied with a less bumpy bump map for an underwater look.
i dont really know how fog works having never used it but i assume it must use shaders of somekind so if you changed them then it would cover the whole map

Not fog. I'm talking about the steam effe from the hvac. The only thing is I don't know if it even has a bump map, and if not, I don't know if one can be added. I just picked the hvac steam 'cuz it's movement, speed, and the height of it would make it ideal, but I don't know if you can just slap effes in wherever you want, or if they have to be attached to something, nor do I know about enlarging it.
But you've given me yet another idea, X (if I ever get this map put together you'll be on the top of the list of credits). Suppose I add fog and replace its shader with some kind of wavy bump map thing. It would probably go all the way to the top of the map, though. Oh well, lava is REALLY hot, so I guess that'd be ok. Want to kinda' keep it low, though, so it doesn't interfere with aim too much.
