Why Dont We Build Maps Out Of The BSP?

Why Machines? Whats Stopping Us From Makeing A Map From Scratch?

(No flameing, i was wondering what to look into/working with

saving into a .bsp format, mabey making a skin. placing all the weapons and spawns. Adding everything to the map. If we got the swamp fox to help out, then im sure our only problems would be the first 2.

I don't think I quite understand the question here. Are you just saying "Why doesn't someone do it?" ('cuz with the bsp editing aps that I know of it would be impossible atm) or are you asking "Why doesn't someone make it possible?"

Well, I don't think the collision is understood well enough just yet. The collision extraction/injection aps won't allow you to change the number of verts. Also, when editing the collision, you sort of have to guess which verts connect to which others. This would make creating your own collision from scratch hugely problematic--obviously more information is there that we haven't got to yet. (I say "we" but I guess I mean "they"-the actual hackers who figure this stuff out). That is the biggest problem I see: finding out how to build a collision. The mesh's seem pretty straight forward (though I don't really understand why they're broken up into so many pieces: why not just one big mesh?) so I don't think they'd be too much trouble to build.
I suppose you would also have to build a scenario tag. Is that a script or something? You would have to script in where and when anything (mach movements,ambient sound effects, any other effects) would take place. I would think once all that was done, it would just be a matter of placing character/vehicle/weapon/scenery/etc. spawns.
I would say there would have to be an entire new ap for this. If not for the entire map building process, then at least for making the scenario from scratch.

Well Voyde I thought we might try doing that as a matter of fact before you made this thread.

And no the collision is not a problem because you are only changing the current bsp and if done correctly(although it takes awhile) then the map should have perfect collision. The only real thing keeping me from trying it is that the map would look like shit becasue the bitmaps would be fucked unless you wanted the map to be one solid texture. Other than that all it would take is some hard work and some time. :wink:

Heh. Don't know the first thing about making uv maps. I just figured they wouldn't be THAT hard or nobody would ever do it... then again, I guess I haven't seen any done in a mod. All injected models seem to be skinless and just use a shader.

Its mostly becuase they are too hard to acurately map, i wouldnt have a problem with doing it if the models could be viewed a bit larger.
