Single Player on System Link

I am not sure about this, but somebody told me about it. . . Is it true that if you get rid of all of the AI and stuff from a single player map and add it the right way to the mainmenu, that even people without mods can play on it over system link? A few days ago, I went into a game and I couldn't figure out wha level it was, but I am pretty sure it wasn't multiplayer, because I could see a sandstorm. Can someone tell me if what I have herd was tru, and maybe tell me what level I was on a few days ago.
