Hex, offsets, map header, index offset, meta offset

These are all some random words that i picked out of the halo 3 mod forum. I was wondering if someone could make a tutorial on what those are, and what a map consists of. The information one would need to know to "understand" a map. I wouldn't want a one word answer for each one, like, "hex is .....". I would want to know more about it, like how everything relates to each other in the map, so I would be able to fully understand what its talking about. I was wondering if someone could do this? or if someone has one already? Or if you need like two years of scripting experience and all of these qualification...
