Now I've got a question about it.

In one of the steps, I looked back and saw that shared.map had to be placed along with the new modified maps.

I did not have that, and yet my KT still worked fine. What is shared.map for?

shared.map has shared stuff in it. Things that are shared between all the maps are sometimes located in this map. Think of it as a permanent cache for often used items to decrease loading times. It's not 100% necessary to my knowledge

It IS necessary if your xbox doesn't have Halo2's cache still in the cache drive - if you play a different game that overwrites the cache, and then try to play Halo2 without shared.map, you won't get very far.
