My dad works at AutoDesk (makers of 3ds max, maya, etc.) and I can get 3ds max full for about $250.
What version is best for creating maps in halo?
thanks

I would say 8, I tried it for a little bit it was pretty nice. Don't know anything about 9, though.

They're all nice, but if you want all the best features get 9. 8's the next best choice. It has a some features I'd like to have, but sadly 7 does not have them.

is 9 capable of modeling halo bsp?
Basically are there any functionality drawbacks with getting 9? because 9 is newer, and I do have a $3,750 discount. You were saying 8 is better for halo, please explain why. And thanks for the replies

8 can export animations but if you just want to model BSP's go for 9.

Reason I say that is, 9 is newer and has better features. I never compared the two, so there may not be much of a difference, but I know 9 is better than 8.

I think I will go for 9, and is there anyone working on a plugin for xporting animations from 9? Thanks for the help, and I'm sure I'll be needing a lot more when I purchase 3DS... lol
yoohoo7, you can take the edit profile out of your sig I_F fixed that...

Yes, they do have an exporter for 3ds Max 9 that does animations. It should be under the Halo CE utilities.

Here it is.

If you plan on doing any H2V modding, just stick with 8... there isn't a plugin that is fully compatible with 9 yet.

8 and 7 are both great... I had some issues with 8 on my old PC with random errors every once in a while... but.. it works great on every other PC I've used it on

scripts dont always work correctly Blitzkreig animation Exporter has ALWAYS worked for me. and can that little script do all the type of animation (.jma .jmo .jmp)?

and still 9 is almost no diffferent from 8 except like a small ui update i think.

That's absolutely incorrect. Max 9 has a wealth of new features that 8 lacked. However, few of them would be important to someone using it soley for this purpose.

well since i used it for soley this purpose i guess i missed them :?

wait in max 9 can u select polys by more than one material in 8 u can only select polys by 1 material and its anoying... :?

Have you tried using this script? BlueStreak is a script and it works for me all the time.

I wouldn't call it a 'little' script either. That can script is compatible with all version of 3ds Max 5+ and GMax.

As for the types of animation exportations, I don't know. Why don't you look?

Completely wrong. Just like Tural said, 3ds Max 9 has a huge amount of new features, but for those solely using it for Halo overlook those new features.

To further prove my point, look here.

so since i have no intension of buying vista, 9 would work fine? I think I will get the latest version. Maybe I'll get 8 as well, I can probably get it for free or something.
Nice to know you guys will help, I know I will need a lot more once I start mapping
