Open Edge Error, avoid building new faces

Well, I've been reading a lot of tutorials and right now, I'm trying to attach a fence to the ground and for some reason, I make one face at a time, and all of a sudden, i get like 30 open edges and I can't seem to fix them. I read somewhere that lets say my ground is @ 5000. I could jsut attach it and set the Z coord to 5001. And they said a frag is 3 in diameter so it cant even go under it. Is this true because if so, it will make this map im working on unbelievealbe easy?

Are you welding the vertices together?

Try going into edge edit mode, click the edges on ground ,were you want it to be. Sort of like making a fence in the edges. Then hold down the shift key with the move transform gizmo on. Now move the edge up the Z axis to the hieght you want. Then make the material id of the new faces and uvmap it.
