I know you have all heard Ace0fSpades and or myself talking about FoF, (Fall of the Forerunners) the new Halo game we are designing on source. I was recently downloading all sorts of mods for source to get an idea of source's capabilities. That's when I came across Garry's Mod 8 v.3 on the source engine. I have never heard that much about this mod except for the info given about it on A.O.T.S (Attack of the Show), formally know as the Screensavers on G4. It was a very well put together mod.

NiTrOuSoXiDe had then posted a thread about the fact that we REALLY need to help Halo Custom Edition stay alive. Knowing that we still have hope from SonicExtreme and Jahrain with their Sonic Adventure Online and Zelda Online mods, StormWing with the Armored Core: OC Mod, Ace0fSpades and I's Fall of the Forerunners Mod, to bring more players into the Custom Edition scene. My friends and I decided to braistorm some ideas on how to bring more players. We scouted the Halo PC servers to find that most people (around 42.21% of the 300 people we asked) said that they dont want to switch over to Custom Edition because maps are too complicated to created using big modeling tools such as 3ds Max 7 and GMAX. The other 25.12% had just not wanted to change over because of the fact of no campaign. Finally, the other 32.67% said that they had never heard of Custom Edition.

So, this little survey showed us the results that modeling was too hard for people, and they didnt understand the concepts of modeling. We then conducted a small survey on some of the Garry's Mod players. We asked them 1 simple question; Why do you like Garry's Mod? The most common answer was that you are in control of the game. You can set up small batlle scenes or whatever, then battle your friends in it. You can even export it to hammer and then create it into a map. Then my buddy and I came up with a new idea, Why don't we combine the two?

Thats where I got the idea for HEK2. The HEK2 will be a simpler version of the HEK with many new features. There will no longer be a tool, sapien, guerilla, and use of 3ds Max 7. Instead, this is what will be included in the HEK2:

--Kornman 00 v.102
--A Hobo v.102
--Tool ++
--BitterBanana's Fly Cam (Editing Purposes)
--All the tags from various authors*
--The HEK2 Construct Map**
--The New HEK2 Building Scenery***

*The tags will either be picked out by myself or you can submit them to me in a post or make a post naming off the tags you would like to see.

**This will be a blank map that will come in 5 forms (all water, all land, all air, land and air, inside building) and three sizes: small and medium (and some large maps)

***This will be the juicy section of the HEK2. This will be a collection of scenery used to make maps. This will mean no more 3ds Max 7. All map making will be done in Hobo.

As you can see, the Building Scenery is my main concern. I know you wont be able to built REALLY COMPLEX - I WANNA CRY BECAUSE IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL MAPS. You will be able on the other hand, create maps that look and feel to your liking. I'll even include my bot tags for people who want to make basic maps with ai. And my tutorial for making them search around maps and other ideas. I will include many shapes and designs that will be used to create maps. All scenery will releate to halo's current architecture with the exceptions of other necessary models needed in creations of a effective map. This will completely eliminate the use of 3ds max 7. Some us will still be using the 3ds Max 7 way though. I just want a way for amatuer mappers to be able to create maps.

This is where everybody else comes into play; I can't do this all by myself. I need submissions of one of the following items:

--Tags that you would like to be sceen in the kit. (note: use the following format so i can give credit where it is due:

NAME OF ORIGINAL CREATOR
NAME OF SUBMISSIONER
NAME OF TAGS
BRIEF DESCRIPTION (optional)
--Scenery that would be placed in the kit ( note: please submitt them with the following format so I can give credit where it is due:

YOUR NAME
SCENERY NAME
BRIEF DESCRIPTION (optional)

--Models that you can't convert to scenery on your own. Again, please use the above submission format.
--Anything else that you would like to see. EX: Tuts, other utilities, etc...

This will be a new and helpful tool for noob mappers to use and will possibly (and probably) draw more attention to the Halo Custom Edition scene. Also, if I can get enough of this done by the end of the week, I'll release a map showing how easy it is to make a map using the HEK2.

NOTE: Comments are GREATLY appreciated and are welcomed,(not flammed) if you have anything you want to say, please say it. I know i might get flammed but this is not the time for that. CE is dying. Lets go put it on life support and give it a heart transplant! We can rebuild it! We have the technology! It must live! UPDATE:
Heres what I need,
Anything that would be sweet or useful in making a map. I currently have various bricks, sniper towers, bridges, and bases done. I would love to see other forms of bases. MB a blood gulch base? Also, I would like evrything to have atleat 2 textures. If somebody does happen to do the blood gulch bas, do a red team AND blue team textured version.

Anything can be submitted.

And for a little update:
Destructible scenery!
Im thinking about making scenery have a damaged form
E.G. You shoot a wall, it cracks or breaks. You shoot a tree, it shatters.

OK, ATTENTION ALL MAPPERS
THIS IS WHAT I REALLY NEED RIGHT NOW:
6 maps,


1 small map--------> all grass (with canyons surrounding it)
1 small map--------> all desert (with canyons surrounding it)
1 medium map----->all grass (with canyons surrounding it)
1 medium map----->all desert (with canyons surrounding it)
1 large map--------->(all grass, water somewhere in it) (preferably like zanzibar's location)
1 large map--------->(all water)--You'll see on this one

I need all of these done ASAP...if anybody can do one (or more...hopefully more!!) please tell me. These maps shouldnt take that long but I just dont have the time to do them. This is your chance to help!

OH NO! ANOTHER SET BACK! MY PHOTOSHOP TRIAL RAN OUT!

Time for another little update,

Ok, Im sitting at school and having little thought to the HEK2.
We really need more help. I have absolutely 0 help from the community. How can we call this a community project when its being done by a single person?

I am thinking about just releasing a small .rar file that will have a few of my latest models that will be included in the kit.

I hit a road block last night:
My trial of Adoe Photoshop ran out. This means that my only way of skinning is in MS Paint on XP...EW YUCKY DUCKY GRAPHICS! I MB able to change all of that. One of my close friends at halomods.com referenced a paint program called the GIMP. The GIMP has the ability to create bump maps ( even though i do not yet have the knowledge of how to apply them to my models ) and apply them to models. The GIMP may have just saved the HEK2.

Other than that, the HEK2 is going just fine. Too bad I might not release it if I dont get enough help :grins: J/K...I just really need some help. If you noticed my latest post, you will see that I still need those maps. Those maps are one of the most important parts of the HEK2. The models are the second part.

As for now, im about to get busted for sneaking on at school. :grins: too late...

Ok, HEK2 is basically going to remove ALL USES OF 3DS MAX 7! It will included a MASSIVE selection of premade models ranging from a simple box, to a modeled sanctuary of of Halo2. It will allow the user to basically create maps out of premade models and make everything with out having to worry about UVW mapping and all of that other hard stuff us 1337 mappers/modders are good at.

Ill start on the grass maps, medium and large. I dont know how big small is so Ill just guess.

no. its just a model, NON RIPPED, that can be placed in your map. It will be all the models from it just put ina small lil package

Thanks for all the help up to this point. I have decided to make a program that opens up map files. Currently, u still have to use sapien. That means, SoccerFreak needs to supply me with the sapien tags for the maps. Sorry for an confusion I have caused.

this is an EXCELLENT idea!! i can make maps for you. any map u like. ill make it. well, unless u ask for some super duper map but i can make al lthe maps u listed above.

i can also make weapon tags, scenery (although my collisions never seem to work anymore, they used to) and some others i have done that i cannot remember at this moment.

oh and if for some strange reason u need bouncing water, i can make it.
