[NOOB QUESTION] How to start HEKing?

Hi, I know this is a very noobish question, and it has probably been answered before, but I couldnt find it. 
How do you start to make custom Halo CE maps? Are there any tutorials on it? I did not understand the one that came with HEK. How did all of you get to make maps? Did you use the official tutorial thingys?
Another thing, what tools do you use? I know Paintshop Pro has a trial, but what about MAX? Did you get a "special discount" from a friend? Are there any trials for it? Did anyone actually pay the full price for it? (thats alot!) Thanks for reading, and please answer. Thanks!
