Extracting Audio from Video

Can anybody tell me how I can extract the Audio from a .avi or .mpeg movie file? Preferably the program is free. I would like to do this so i can listen to the tutorials on my Ipod while watching the video. This way my parents don't get mad at me for having the volume on the computer.

I was there and all there stuff is only trial and can only extract like 30 seconds or something like that.

no but i have a program that can split things. its a feature in one of my useful stuffs of misc. action
