Tool Help

Post by davek20 »

I finished making a level and did all the stuff in tool. When i use
"tool structure levels\...." its starts to build it and then it says "ERROR couldn't update edge (the #) <red>". THere is about 20 of these. So, is the problem in the model of the level? How can i fix this?

Thanks in advanced

Yes, your problem is in your model.

Open your level back up in 3dsMax of whatever. Then click on file -> import. Browse to your HaloCE folder and then scroll down the file type to VWR file(<- I think its VWR or WVWR or something). Then find the VWR file that the same name as your map.

On the import dialog box that opens unselect everything except for create new objects. Now hit F3 to see the wireframe. The problems edges will be white usually, maybe different for others? Either you have a small hole somewhere or an edge is sticking through another edge or face.

Fix as many of the edges as you can then delete all of the new imported objects. You can delete them all by clicking on "Select by name" and highlighting all of the funny named objects that are usually at the botom, you should be able to pick them out. Then run tool again and repeat the import process if needed.

Good Luck :)

WOuld it be the VRML file? when i opened this one. it has 3 options : Reset Scene, Turn Into 3DS Coordinates and Create Privatives. When I clicked ok, there was some dotted white lines, are those the ones I delete?

obviously they represent the ones on your model so you would sort out the ones on your model and use the wrl file for reference ;)

after you've sorted the porblem out on your model you might aswell delete the imported objects

I am still not quite following how to do this...its kind of hard trying to figure out where each edge is. Anyway, i deleted a few of the edges and got MORE errors than before. So i think i am going to restart. Thanks anyway.

Brief tut on doing this can be found in the Halo Wiki:

http://wiki.fpsgamers.se/index.php/Halo ... ToolErrors

Acknowledgements are posted there to Kirk4 for originally tut'ing this fix :D

It's difficult to tell from that picture. One thing I can say is this:

When you import the WRL file, yes, you uncheck the top two boxes. Leave the bottom one checked. The WRL geometry merely highlights the position of the error, so you have to selct your object, go to edit mesh mode, and inspect the edges, faces at that location. Also, the HEK tutorial describes all these errors in the Level Compilation -> Tool errors section.

ie:

-----
When compiling using Tool the following error message appears:
### ERROR couldn't update edge # (red).

This is typically caused by faces or surfaces that are duplicated or shared between objects.

The faces have shared vertices and\or faces. The objects should either be separated or merged.

A good example would be 2 identical cubes that have been moved together such that they each share one side. The cubes should either be moved apart, or merged together which would include the removal of any duplicate or illegal faces.
----
So thats what you're looking for: two faces in the same place.

Try this to start. Select the faces in the region of the wierd looking error geometry. Use click & drag select. See if more than once face exists in that exact location. If so, delete one of them. Also, check the vertices at the corners of the face. If there are double verts, weld them.

Note: if you click and drag holding ctrl, it multiple-selects. if you click & drag holding alt, it removes items from the selection. Make sure you select only what you want to delete, or you will just get open edges.

If necessary, delete all faces and recreate them in the location of the error. Be vigilant, save you work, export again and recompile.

Also, one error is good man! I got 290 on my first map ;)

i had a map with that many too and i brought the error count down to 5 left and then i went to fix them.... recompiled... then BAM!! i had like 400 new errors :?: :?: whats up with that

Tool concentrates on one type of error at a time. Dont worry, this is progress. Now you have to work on your new errors, using a similar technique to before.

Dont worry man, and keep working on it. If anything you will learn how to create geometry that tool will accept, and if you cant fix this problem, you will be able to create a level next time that works better from scratch.

The 400 errors were open edges right? This means you have a hold in your level. You have to close all the holes. To quote another guy (dunno who), imagine your level inc. skybox is like a container filled with water. It has to be watertight. Each object with its edges and vertices must meet edges and vertices on the object next to it.

Go round your level, weld those vertices together, make sure there are no gaps, and keep working on it man!!
