If you find the tutorial totally confusing, then you really should consider not trying to use the software. Now, I'm not saying that I understand the tutorial, as I haven't even read it and I have no experience with this kind of thing anyway, and there's nothing wrong with toying with it and trying to learn it... But just something to consider, and I'll quote Thinkgeek on this:
If you don't get it, then you shouldn't get it.
If my info is correct, then these are developer-level tools, and were not intended to be newb-friendly. Just a warning.

yah i think that newbs should stay to hmt and sparkedit until they get used to that and then move onto hek other wise there not gonna understand anything bout hek.

that has got to be the stupidest thing ive ever heard...
if you dont try it youll never get good at it
and btw that tut is really hard to follow, espeicaly without the acctual program open
and he counldnt have had it on the 4th

I was just trying to politely discourage behavior like "OMG!!! i don't get dis stuFF!!1! sp00nf33d me teh info cuz im too lazy to lern it!"
