Ok... first off, GREAT vids, man! I watched the first 7 before I found that there were some things around the house that needed to be done first.

I started working along with the PSP tutorial... now, I have the full version of 7, and it of course doesn't have some of the features/convenience that 8 does. Now, my problem comes with the alpha maps... I really have no clue what do do for those! The window that you hit the 3rd button in -- it doesn't exist in 7, AFAIK!

Now, I did try looking at Masks > New > Show all, but I didn't get a dialog like the one you got... nothing about the same subject or anything... is there any chance that you might possibly know what I'm doing wrong here, or what it is that I should be looking for? PSP 7 has no help topics on Alpha Maps, just Alpha Channels. Nothing about creating them, etc. either.

I'd install the trial of 8, but it detects that 7 is installed, and tells me to uninstall 7 first. I'll keep my full version over a 60 day trial, thank you very much. :(

Thanks again kirk for the new tutorials, they really are great. If you ever have time, drop by the IRC channels #halomods and #halomodshelp.

These really are great tutorials, well thought out, and I haven't had a single problem with them at all yet. I would recommend these to anyone.

good job on those tutorials. I am not a nub but the tutorial is kinda hard to follw and you make the tutorials simple. Thanks! By the way, if Gearbox doesn't hire MonoxideC, they won't hire Kirk. I am excited for the tutorial that tells you how to make your own vehicles and/or scenery since that is the biggest problem I am having with my map.

HEK tutorials

Post by pooppy »

Kirk I would like to thank you for all the hard work you have put into making all the HEK videos. I don't think I would be able to get any where in 3ds with out them.

I would also like to request that you make a tutorial on how to build portals, I have yet to be able to make one and would really like to use them in my level design. Thanks again.

The portals tutorial is coming up. I'm just wrapping things up on a tutorial that covers fixing possible errors when exporting a map (open edges and bitmap errors).
Here's a list of tutorials that will be coming out in the next couple of weeks:
- Portals, ladders
- Water: Rivers, Oceans, and lakes
- Importing custom sounds
- Tag editing
- Bump map creation

And as soon as we get some kinks worked out (namely trying to figure out how on earth you do it), there will be a set of tutorials that cover:
- Weapon creation
- Vehicle creation
- Biped creation

If you have any suggestions or comments, we'd like to hear them!

Kirk

HEK Video Tutorials = Absolutely Amazing Mate, Nice1

Post by LiN »

Hi Kirk, I downloaded the HEK tutorial videos and am on stage 5 atm - creating bases for the maps. Those videos are absolutely amazing man, an excellent job all round.

Thanks so much both from me and all the other tech n00bs who have little idea how to use programs such as paintshop and 3D Max, let alone how to actually implement a working map.

well, I will finish this tutorial today or tomorrow, and will be downloading the next edition of map-making a la kirk.

You are the Don mate

Bl00dy 'ell mate, are you going for Dude of the year award?

Post by LiN »

... Just read the rest of the posts in this forum and I am absolutely amazed that you have both the time and the generosity to create tutorials for maps, bases, vehicles, weapons - and bipeds!!! etc.. Absolutely incredible!!...

You are really helping a hell of a lot of us out Kirk4, thanks a lot.

If there's anything I or anyone else can do to assist you, let us know man.

You are keeping the Halo community allive single handed!!! haha :D

BTW: I had an idea for a defense vehicle, a biped (well, I was going to implement it on wheels, as biped is too damn hard), with dual chain guns that the player can stand in and use as a vehicle. In order to keep the balance right, the player would be heavily armoured by the vehicle (die less quickly), but the vehicle would move really slowly and the players head would be exposed (haha - snipe that sucker).

Also, I wanna make a hand-held chaingun, again the player walks more slowly so as to preserve play balance, and a proper assualt rifle with 2x zoom and plenty of punch and accuracy if fired in semi-auto.

Halo Editor Kit oOOOOowwwnnnZZZ !!!

First... Thanks for your hard work my friend your tut's rock my socks!

Texturing in Max, i can do this but i enjoy seeing it done by someone else, maybe give me as well as other clues on how to do it! We're talking multiple UVM maps, unwrap (if your feeling crazy) all on one mesh..

I cant wait for the custom scenery tutorial i have been scratching my head on this one i cant get crap to work :( But i see your working on it and makes me feel good!

Other then that i think yor doing a great job!

I just finished making something that I think will help you out. I uploaded it last night and we're just waiting for the halomods.com gods to post it. I would imagine that it would be up sometime this afternoon.

Kirk, I was watching your video tutorials, and I don't understand why I'm lining the UVW map up to my polygons. It makes more sense that I woudl use the top down image to correct the rest of the map, not use the other parts to correct the map. If that's true, then I will have a very square map... In any case, could I get away with just using the UVW modifiers plane or box or something function? That would make it so no matter how I move the polygons, it projects it from the top down.

You know a hell of alot more about this than me, as all I've learned has COME from your tutorials, outside of Max skills.

Edit: I'm stuck with the UVW map. I made my original bitmap so it would reflect what a top down image of my hap, minus the bases and trees.
