A Halo 2 Project

Post by Axel »

Surely it has been done, maybe overly done already. The fatherly Red Vs. Blue, Fire Team Charlie, Lethal Rage, SvF, BC, and I'm sure of more Halo projects that have been in the light here and there, now and then.

Obviously there will be people continuing on in such footsteps with the on-coming Halo 2, and I am hopefully going to be one of those who stride forward in their processes.

Now, I'll be honest, I'm an amateur. I've made a total of three machinima pieces. Two of them were done in Halo CE out of boredom, and the other was done with Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It turned out a lot like a movie trailer, except for the fact that movie trailers don't really have minute-long credits afterward.

I'm not exceptionally taking to many fields of the process, I'll admit that. I've been working with Premiere for probably two or three months now and I still haven't really figured out how to apply and operate the effects, and God knows I CANNOT understand the encoding processes or compression and/or whatnot (I am forced to export as .wmv, for I cannot for the life of me figure out how to save my movies as .mov / .avi without having a dozen boners worth of extra megabytes in the file. However, I personally think that what I lack in these fields, I make up for in a few others.

I'm not boasting here, but I won't be modest either. I am quite a writer when my mind allows me to be. So many ideas are constantly hitting me when I think what kind of story I can make with different aspects of gameplay. Zanzibar especially, which is the level I am focusing on initially (for now), gives me a feel for the history that this place has, could have, and might have as I see more ideas flow.

Also, I have decided that the Axelhart Project (the name of the process; the work itself remains untitled) will not be a humor-based work. Quite contrary, it will most likely turn out to be an action drama. Also, of course the storyline will hold originality, but originality meaning general creativity. I am going to do my best to hold true to the storyline of Halo.

In order to better the chances of this, I went out last night and bought all three titles: The Fall of Reach, The Flood, and The First Strike. Just last night I read through at least 1/3 of The Fall of Reach, which surprisingly QUICKLY took me in. I hate reading, but it really is a great book so far, I'd recommend it to all of you.

Back on subject, my goal at the moment is split. I have pretty much tried viciously to rule out dividing the storyline into episodes, however I may have to do it this way. I am aiming toward a single movie, which I am having doubts of even the possibility as for the current notes and ideas I have down, it would take at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours to tell the story through. I don't even know if it's possible to have a movie clip that long that will actually have a reasonable filesize that people would actually be willing to download, and so if my worries prove correct, I will wind up going the path of episodes. The other idea I had was a sequel or a trilogy with shorter timespans, but I just realized that I would have to split them into three different stories that have somewhat of an ending to each.

Well anyhow, the reason I am writing all of this up is because I obviously cannot do all of this on my own. I have a grand total of two, maybe if I'm lucky, three friends who are even slightly interested in the project, and the only skill they can bring to the project would be voiceacting (which I'm even hesitant about now).

I mean not to get anyone's hopes up (if that's even possible) because I cannot guarantee that this will even go anywhere, but I am hoping to see if there is anyone who would be interested in being part of the team. Again, at the moment nothing and I mean NOTHING is official as it is so early... I'll only be making a list of people that show interest for later reference, but if you ARE interested, go ahead and let me know, and also let me know what you think you could bring to the series.

Although it is not vital to what I have in mind at the moment, it would be really helpful if anyone of interest who will be planning on modding Halo 2 when it arrives could incorporate those skills as well. Obviously there is no portfolio for Halo 2 itself at the moment, but I'd still like to hear of anyone's confidence in their abilities to work with Halo 2.

Anyway, basically this is what I am looking for: (The software I list is not solid, it is just what I currently use. Go ahead and list what you have in mind if anything.)
  • Famililarity with video production software (Premiere 6.0)
Famililarity with audio production software (Audition 1.0)
Holds knowledge of running a website
Creative writers (though it would be better if you could bring other qualities, for I am stubborn and do not often "share the pen" with equality).
Current Halo Mod-makers who may be able to help me put storyboards together.
Knowledge of Halo storyline - Events, characters, organizations, armor, weaponry, all of it.
Knockaround Guys - If you don't have patience, or if you are NOT someone who doesn't give a fuck, then you probably won't be able to handle my persistance as a KG. Basically what I would need from you guys is to help act out scenes in Halo 1 which we would eventually incorporate into Halo 2 when the project actually goes into motion. I am planning on recording these scenes (PC version by FRAPS, as I currently do not have a DV camera to capture XBOX gameplay yet) for further speculation and molding until we find a scene that is well acted out that will turn out to be the storyboard for scenes acted out in pieces that will be filmed for the real project later on. (The idea of having the physical actors have a copy of this scene so they know generally of what will go on. Maybe it is pointless, but I thought I'd write it down just in case).
I can't really think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things.

As for the storyline itself, I have a good idea of what it will be based around and some of the details, but as I said I am still reading through the books and trying to finally Finish Halo 1 via XBOX so I can keep my storyline from deviating from Halo's history. I am however, very decided upon the story of Halo 2 NOT being incorporated whatsoever. Basically I will be taking the story of Halo 1 on a different route, rather than Halo 2.

Although it isn't much, the year I am planning for the story to take place is 2603, approximately 50 years after Halo 04's destruction and the assault upon Earth.

I'm probably forgetting some stuff, so if anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

ok rabiv then why say anything at all?

Ok sounds cool but you will run into some problems, it will take awhile before someone figures out how to work a camera in multiplayer (hacking it) to turn out like red vs blue in HALO 2, because im guessing the code is different. Then you will have to have a video captureing card to maintain quality of imported video AND have people on an lan game (via in your house) to do the acting because hacking xbox live online with a modded box will take a great amount of time and effort. So when/if you jump over those hurdles then look me up and i can help with the video editting/script/and such i have an ati 9200 all-in-wonder (with capturing capabiltiies) and a nice big clean 120 gigs of space to store it. But i don't have a modded xbox but i do have premiere, photoshop, and various other video editting software that i can help with the effects...i have an idea i was running with but don't know how many viewers i will have. Its completely different from any halo series to date...but i doubt it will catch on because the market is flooded with em.

Well first, hacking the camera? That'd make things easier I'm sure, but I wasn't planning on it. And, I'm not trying to make something like red vs blue. It is going to be Action Drama as I said. But *IF* I were to make it like red vs blue, why would I have to hack the camera anyway? Rooster Teeth hasn't modded, at all in their videos.

Second, I just recently bought a video capture card that comes with some pretty nice software (Pinnacle Studio 9). In all my wonder of the software, I even wound up springing another 90$ for some nice high quality sound effects (maybe a waste, but I think it'll be worth it in the long run). A few days ago I went out and bought Combat Command, a pretty cheap lan hookup for XBOXs. My second XBOX just came in today with a copy of Halo 1, and I have 2 copies of Halo 2 pre-ordered at the moment. Have some controllers heading in within a couple of days to up the playercount, and also Halo 1 Soundtrack is on it's way as well (may not use it, but I like it regardless).

In a couple of weeks I'll have ordered a third (and possibly final) XBOX as well as another Halo 2 copy, and hopefully by that time I'll have a script written up (doubtful).

I'm still brainstorming over the storyline as I have yet to finish my third and final book: The First Strike. I think I've come up with something that I'm going to be pretty solid with, however.

Unfortunately, when I first thought this up, I had already written up some dialogue and specific camera angles for reference in my thoughts that ODST's were playable in Halo 2. Unfortunately, wrong I was, so I've begun to rewrite it.

ANYHOW, it's still in the early stages.

Well I'm now officially poor. I'm down to $17.00 to my name after pre-ordering a 3rd copy of Halo 2. However, I believe for the first few weeks 2 XBOXs should be enough for filming the initial scenes, not to mention the fact that audio development will surely take up time as well.

Very good job ...but why are you buying so many xbox's and halo2's? seems weird....but i have an idea for a movie..i was gonna use it for halo ce but since it was so close to halo 2 i figured i would use halo 2. And what i meant was by hacking the camera is that the annoying target reticle would be in the screen and when you crop it down (borders) your taking out a huge part of the movie. But anyway...i have some stories i can give you...i havn't read the books so i don't know how "realistic" they are....but only if you need ideas. Im guessing you plan on making the movies by yourself? or do you have friends that are helping? Im gonna work on a movie also via Xbox Lan so it should be interesting. Im sorry i thought it was gonna be a comedy, didn't know it was gonna be an action drama...mine is an action, drama, comedy also but mine is a 3 part mini-series...so it will be "big" but not "long". (that sounded really dirty),

good work tho, ill keep in contact with this idea...to follow you along, let me know if you have any question via photoshp, premire, or such...and the sound clips are only a waste if you don't use them (which are they btw?), i like to use real sounds and footage, so im capturing them with a recording device. Do you have frooty loops? or cool edit pro (2000)? i would suggest getting them they are life savers for audio. Frooty loops lets you make music (much like mtv music generator) and cool edit pro lets you tweak audio and sound and give cool voice effects (like pitch shifting to make you sound like vader or the chipmunks). Those are some ideas tho...

I'm ordering the XBOX's and copies of Halo 2 so I can hook up a max of 4 XBOX's to one game for a total of 12 on-screen characters. Even if I never have a shot with 9 or more characters within it, it'll still make the recording process a lot easier.

About the camera hacking: Yeah, unfortunately you're right but it's been done and in the long run, if it's a good story, it won't be that jading toward the audience. But hell, if someone makes a mod for no HUD/reticle/weapon for the XBOX I just may have to get meself a mod chip. Unless I'd need 4... then... well then I'm screwed royally on getting my Mini DV Camera for awhile.

I appreciate the offer about the stories, but at the moment I'm trying to open up the thoughts and notes that I have to see what I can get out of them. Also, although I do have a good idea of where I'm going to be going with this, I'm not setting it in stone since the principle level I'm hoping to take advantage of (Zanzibar) may not be eligible for how I want to tell the story. Gotta feel like the physical background matches the historical background as well as provide for the emotional states that the video would portray.

About the moviemaking on my own, unfortunately I am alone at the moment. I have two friends that are SLIGHTLY interested, but only in voiceacting. I know they wouldn't last in headbobbing. The boredom would very quickly either get in the way of the quality of the film, annoy the hell out of me, or just leave them no longer caring. Not sure how I'm going to get over that hurdle, but I'll figure something out.

Oh and one thing that is kind of worrying me: Is there no System Link in Halo 2? That is what I've heard, and I am going to be ROYALLY screwed if there isn't a way to hook up all my XBOX's to one game. I don't know how XBOX Live works, but I'm assuming you need a new subscription per XBOX, right? I seriously hope I don't need Live for a Lan Party hookup, because then that's another what, 200$ right there?

Knowing my luck, this will all fall apart in seconds of production and I'll have wasted a grand, heh.

Bout the progs, never heard of Frooty Loops or Cool Edit Pro (2000). I'll have to look into them though.

Oh and the sound effects categories from Pinnacle Studio 9 I unlocked are UFX:

Animals
Classic Foley
Comic
Explosions and Fires
Guns
House 1
House 2
Sports
Tools
Vehicles 1
Vehicles 2

sweet good job, you should also try out flashkit.com they have free sounds and soundloops, i highly suggest getting cool edit at least because its a DREAM proggie if your thinking about doing this officially, the sound quality of most mic's are horrible and even with good mics they occasionally have the hissing or popping noise and with the program you can drown them out, you can also do revearse echo (sounds like God), and/or like i said before pitch shifting which is a hard to find program in itself, i've heard both yes and no about the system link, un hoping coop system link because me nd my buddy play halo coop and i would rather enjoy playing it on a different screen then on split screen now that i have an extra tv to do it with. Also, is your computer specs good enough to handle a large load like that? I mean raw video is freaking huge files, and the rendering in adobe premiere (althought real time now) takes a pretty good system to work correctly. (i use premiere at school rather then at home because they have better computers), and what about file size how large will most of these files be in? just wondering...and are you going to host them on your home computer?

But yoru right about the camera if its a good movie nobody will care i don't think, just dont get discouraged by flamers and such, and learn to adjust your film by viewing how the public likes/dislikes your film.

I'll check out flashkit. So far Audition seems to have worked pretty well for me, but I'll try anything to see what works. Also, once I turn in a few applications and hitch a job, I'm going to save up cash for a better microphone and/or sound card, but unfortunately that won't be for a few weeks.

And yeah, my computer can hold about 3-4 hours of highest quality footage. More than enough to put the movie together one chapter at a time, I think. However, Adobe Premiere has given me problems when I export my files from it. I am currently seeing what I can do with just Pinnacle Studio (though it gets annoying because a lot of its features are locked and cost a buttload to unlock). Also trying Vegas Video which seems very nice so far.

I'm most familiar with Premiere, but it's just that the exporting itself is what pisses me off, and if I can't export, there's no use in using it at all.

Im sorry i forgot you have audition adobe ripped it from another program that is VERY similar (if not the same program i don't remember) to cool edit, so keep that its cool. And have you tried reinstalling it? premiere i mean. That export problem sounds weird...i can't stand pinncle studio 8 i got it twice with different things (video card and something else), i WOULD highly suggest getting adobe premiere working and ONLY using studio for a backup "clean up" tool, its actually good for burning movies to disc tho so if you ever sell in the future use it. I used Vegas WAY back when it was new so i don't know much on how well it is today...i remember its a lot like premiere but less filters and plug-ins but you probably don't need much unless your working with advanced camera angles and special effects. I

have a sound blaster live card which does pretty decient, i would suggest the audigy (card not the external UNLESS you will completely do this FULL time and for the life of the computer)...I've heard good things but you probably need a nice computer to run it (which im sure you have), at least 2 gigs processor yes? and 512 or gig of Ram (memory)? IF not double up on your memory formost before you buy ANYTHING memory is essential and gold for video editting. But the audigy comes with some software and is can basically plug into anything (many people have been using it for there car computers [which i WAS makign]). As far as a mic you only really need a 20 dollar mic/headphone set (you need nice headphones also), if you have audition it should be able to clean up everything and fix mic feedback which is REALLY annoying (you hear it on less quality red vs. blue clone type movies). My BIGGEST advice if you ignore everything i tell you is to back UP EVERYTHING and save often. I can't stress how import this is. You said about 3-4 hours of footage for your movies right? try and compress the files to at least 700mb (or buy a dvd burner, they are cheap now around $100 bucks) and back them up (including the work file) for the just in case situations.

Also which Premiere do you have? I would also suggest learning Adobe After Effects which will help tweak effects and give your movie a more professional look, (im learning it now). AT least learn how to do text effects to include in your title but you can also work with cameras and incorperate it into preimere which i think is very valuable.

2800+ Processor, 512 Ram. I'm due for an upgrade.

The microphone, regardless if the 20 dollar ones work (I know they do, I have one here), I want to get a good one, not that I'd know what a good one is. I know it works for some people, but I just personally see a very big difference between my 20 dollar headset mic and stuff like the audio clip extras on bungie.net. I want to get as close to that quality as possible.

Premiere 6.5. As for backing stuff up, that's a good idea. DVD Burner is probably going to be the last thing I buy though as I'm going to need the microphone before I can even start recording footage. I guess I can spend the next month or two writing the script.

Unless I go back to feeling that my current microphone is worthy. I don't at the moment.

sweet processor, you can upgrade later your machine is decient, (im running on a 800mhz pentium 3) and your memory is good too (i would upgrade to one more 512 stick tho, but thats me i love power), yeah i guess the mic would be more important, are you gonna post pictures and/or some teaser/trailer footage before your first episode is complete? or at least keep the public informed of info that may pop up that we would like....

Most definitely! I could make a trailer out of images, slight footage and a voiceover at the moment, but I've tried going that route before and it wasn't too great. I was hoping to buckle down on Midnight November 9, play through Campaign that night and then record any campaign footage that I could use as useful in a trailer, if it is at all applicable (probably not going to be). I planned on using the different perspective epilogues I have written as voiceovers for a trailer of some kind, but we'll see once November 9 comes.

EDIT: Just read your post Pie. Thanks.

And I'm curious, which programs are they?

EDIT #2: I scared the crap out of myself today. Apparently, if my XBOX does not have it's A/V cable connected, and is turned on, it will flash green and orange. I did not know this, and when I quickly stuck in the power cord, turned it on to grab my Halo CD (since I was heading to a friend's house with my other XBOX), I saw the green light flashing orange. I thought that this was the pre-owned XBOX and so I was immediately pissed off thinking that the 130$ refurbished XBOX I got from Gamestop lasted me a total of a week.

However, there is a problem I still don't understand. The refurbished XBOX wouldn't play my Halo CD when I had it at my friend's house, and I'm not sure why. It would go to the Bungie ad and then freeze on it's own, or if I press start. I took the CD out, wiped it down with my shirt, stuck it back in. Same results.

I took it out again, spat on it, wiped it, and it worked. I don't see how my saliva made a difference, but I guess it did. I really hope it doesn't happen again though because I'm gonna pissed if I have to get this fixed already after 1 freakin' week.

Since I was messing around with my microphone awhile ago, and because I want to show off my impersonations, heh, here's the current quality of my microphone:

http://axelsmack.0catch.com/RvBimpersonations.mp3

Thing is, it sounds horrible without effects... so I'm still going to get a better mic.

yeah i hear a little bit of feed back and hissing...that sucks...hope your finds on a better mic are good...your voice is good tho HA just thought you should know....

and pie do you know how to use all those adobe products? im looking for more tutorials on after effects...trying to learn as much as i can about it...

back to the topic tho...i thought of another problem...since you brung up audio quality...what file format will they be in? wmv..has a smaller file size but i found in MOST cases that the audios is questionable and the video tends to be 1 or 2 shades darker then what was originally editted. I prefer quicktime because the colors are always bright and vibrant (probably because mac developed it or something), but the file sizes are usually huge...you could just try out different codex but then the viewers would have to have similar codex in order to play....i know most people have divx and xvid installed but i hardly ever work with them to really give you a good review of there quality....

Chances are Divx and QT... if I can actually export them as that. Like I said, using Premiere, it seems to have a problem exporting as those. Pinnacle exports them fine though, so I might just have to edit the uncompressed and then export with Pinnacle. Just hope that doesn't hinder the quality any.

EDIT: Yeah here's some even worse feedback on where I'm trying to do Vic:

http://www.axelsmack.0catch.com/RvBimpersonations2.mp3

EDIT 2: Something pissed me off today by the way. Apparently one of my Halo CD's is damaged or something... because I'm pretty sure it's both XBOX's that have had problems running it at some point. It's not that big a deal I guess since the project is for Halo 2, but it sucks especially because I'm not going to be paying another 30 for a Halo 1 copy if I ever have Lan Parties where we want to go old school.

It just better not be the XBOX's not working correctly... then I'll be INSANELY angry.
