Make energy sword actually work

Ok, so I've PMI'd an energy sword into bloodgulch, swapped the pistol's meta for it, made it able to be picked up by the player, and changed the flag so it doesn't explode when it spawns/is dropped.
I can pick it up fine, but when I try to press either mouse button, all I can see is the pretty blue lights on the walls/ground move around, and whatever I was aiming at takes no damage (I tested it with spawned MC's).
What do I need to change to make it actually do damage?

I've changed my Melee key to the right mouse button.

Just melee with it. It's a melee weapon. And you probably haven't.

Just did. I can smack the crap out of the MC's with any other gun, but when I bring out the sword, all I get it the light moving around, and no damage.
EDIT: Unless I messed something up during the PMI. I did it the same way I would PMI a pelican or whatever, except obviously extracting the Sword models/meta instead of the pelican.

You could swap the melle response from the sword for another weapon that does do damage...I think it would work. Never tried.

Change the fp animation trigger meta to the plasma rifle, that'll make it work.
