How do you get the models from halo to edit them with realsoft 3d and then how do you put them back in?

Open up your map in HMT.
Scroll to [mod2] and find the model.
Click 'export model' and save it somewhere.
Open it up in a free modelling program such as Misfit modeller.
Make changes - Someone else will explain what you can and can't do.
Save it correctly.
Import back into HMT over the old one.
Save and play.

When making changes, don't add any objects such as new boxes or spheres. You can only move verts. Model the FP, as Philly said. And if you want the FP model on the third person models, just open up HHT and do a dependency swap on the third person models with the first person model after injecting it into your map.

For me, the UV coordinates are messed up. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a program better suited to extracting Halo 1 models?
