remodelling a map

If I wanted to remodel a map, like change the shape of the hills or the bases on BG, where would I find the files to change with my 3D editting software?
where would the texture files for the maps be kept?
would they be .obj files like the rest of the models or in a different format?
would there be any problems concerning impact? I don't want to remodel a hill into a wall and find players walking through it if the impact physics doesn't recognise the new shape.
EDIT: if I'm approaching this the wrong way, any suggestions how to remodel a map easily? I tried searching but any search with 'map' in it gives me hassle.
