Mip Mapping confusion.

Hi, I am re-skinning some textures in Halo Trial but In order for my textures to appear from long range (rather than fading out as you get further from the texture) I need to create some mip maps for certain textures (this is where my question comes in). Before you compile a image to .DDS the convertor asks you how many mip map levels should I include. Should I select all or choose a number? If I have to choose a number, is that number default for every other texture? This problem causes the game to keep freezing shortly after you create/enter a server or attempt to look at the texture. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
