ethernet cable i think

through a router or hub or cross over cable i.e computer to your laptop (direct connection, which youd require a crossover cable not an ethernet cable)

No, actually all me and my friend do to play lan is use a phone cord and hook up the two computers through ethernet and it works just fine.

Unless you have more extending jacks for your ethernet
