There are 3 things that you want to download: halo map tools, halo hacker tools, and sparkedit (all can be found in the files forum, under the utilities section).

Learn how to use them. They will be your best friends (when it comes to modding PC).

Sparkedit = For graphical use on maps, eg Moving Objects about, changing scenery etc.
HMT = General Modding
HHT = Dependancy Swaping

hope that helps :)

OK ill do a description in much better detail:

MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR MAP!!!!!!!

The maps will be in C:\Programs\Microsoft Games\Halo\MAPS

Spark Edit: A tool that alows you to fly around the level and move objects(NOT ingame)

HMT (Halo Map Tools): A program that allows you to do a bunch of things, includeing extracting sounds, textures, models, and meta.(Used mostly to do almost everything)

HHT (Halo Hacker Tools): A Tool that alows you to get inside the meta and edit it.(IE: change stuff without swaping them)

And to anser your origanal Q:

To modify a texture you need to:

1. Open HMT and open the map you plan on modding

2. Go to the branch Bitmaps

3. Go to the sertain texture you want to modify

4. Extract it(the Texture will be in DDS format)

5. Open the texture up in a paint or photo editing program (I perfer PhotoShop) You will usealy need a plug-in for the paint program to edit DDS files
6. Once done, save in DDS format!!

7. Reinject texture at same place where you extracted it in HMT

8. Save

9.Play it in Halo

10. Have fun with your texture!
