IS it legal to...

Post by EvilPickels »

I kinda wanna put one of my favroite songs in my map but I'm worried it might be copywright infringement.

It's by a famous artist and I wanna put it in game, if I do is that considered file sharing?

It might be because people could simply take the file otut of the map and use it to their will...

Yes it would be illegal if you distribute it. But don't expect them to bust down your door.

on your own computer?, that is kind of far fetched...you would have to be a complete moron for that to happen...and even so, they would be the oned in troubnle for computer fraud...you would not get in trouble because you did not release it your self...

well if you dont sell your map, and you include a note saying not to take the music and sell it/distibute it, it would probably be ok

Dude, you need to calm down. Go ahead and stick the song in your map. ASCAP and RIAA lawyers are NOT going to file a lawsuit. In fact, they'll never even know about it. You can do anything you want with music that you have paid for EXCEPT distribute it. However, the recording industry has bigger fish to fry. Millions of people are sharing billions of mp3's over p2p networks and you think the cops are gonna come after YOU? They're not going to waste their time prosecuting someone who distributed a single song to a few hundred people. Just look at all the halo music videos floating around the net. Do you actually think anyone is getting sued over these minor copyright infringements? Puh-lease.

WTF (F as in frick) do you mean "calm down"?

No I think they might, they sue everyone no matter what (they is fAgGoTz)...

However I ahve seen some of the music veid people put together here on halomods and such and I'm willing to bet they used shared music though... I mean come on, who has a copy of "another one bites the dust" lying around?

and jsut so you guys know I was planning on using music from a disc I BOUGHT.

I might e-mail the artist ofr permission... one downside is he wont let m and will monitor this so if i do boom... LAWSUIT!

jesus... Ijm geting paranoid...

P.S. I'm not trusting you mover seeing as you just joined yesterday. I have my reasons...

p.p.s. It's not your age its jsut that you joined jsut ysterday.

Ok, I don't think that it would matter if it was a disk you bought because you're still sharing music. However, you should do this anyway, simply because no one is going to sue you, and I doubt they could even find you, since you're not required to give out your address when you register here. I know someone put up that one CE map with a song that was copyrighted playing in the background, constantly, non-stop, incessantly...

God that map was annoying.

No I think they might, they sue everyone no matter what (they is ****)...

The RIAA has only sued an infinitely tiny fraction of filesharers who were distributing THOUSANDS of songs via P2P networks. Nobody has ever been sued by the RIAA for putting a song in a game mod or putting a song in a fanboy music video.

To sue a person for copyright infringement, the RIAA has to prove monetary damages. So let's say you're sharing 20 songs on Kazaa. The RIAA will never sue you because the monetary damages inflicted by your distrubution of 20 songs do not equal or exceed the cost of suing you. In other words, it would cost them more to sue you than they have lost in "potential" income.

I might e-mail the artist ofr permission... one downside is he wont let m and will monitor this so if i do boom... LAWSUIT!

First of all, the artist in question probably doesn't even own the rights to their song. Many artists have do not own publishing rights to their own music. To obtain legal permission you would have to contact the publishing company or the legal council to the record company. Trust me, they're NOT going to respond to you. You're not even on their radar.

Yes. You are paranoid. That's why I told you to calm down. Nobody with any financial interest in the song in question is ever going to see your mod and if by some chance they did - it wouldn't be worth suing you because there are NO PROVABLE MONETARY DAMAGES!

P.S. I'm not trusting you mover seeing as you just joined yesterday. I have my reasons...

ok

PUT THE SONG IN THERE AND FORGET BOUT LEGAL STUFF!! I have been doing illegal stuff for a long time and so has everyone else, and they dont get caught. I've seen many fan films do where they take the music so its ok. Just provide the copyright of the song at the end of the movie, and if all possible try not to use the whole song, or you know, most ppl are not gonna rip ur movie of the sound because it has sound effects and such, so thats fine. Thats not called distributing, its called ADVERTISING for the artist!!

dude that's stupid. That would be like you getting busted because they haced your computer and got the song. Or like getting in trouble because someone stole your backup CDs.
