FAQ: How to extract Halo models with correct UVs

Hi
Here, I will show you how to extract models from Halo with correct texture coordinates without having the XBox.
Well, all this cannot avoid the problem of must having the XBox version of Halo, sorry, but there is no way around. This tutorial is written for those who have an ISO of Halo XBox.
All links can be found at the end of this post.
- Have a XBox ISO of Halo.
- First, we need to extract a MAP file from the ISO. Because this is a XBox ISO, you cannot use the "standard" programs. Use XDFSReader for this. You might receive an error message. Ignore it, it will work.
- The MAP file we now have is compressed, so we need to uncompress it. SparkEdit can do this by using "Open Compressed File...". SparkEdit decompresses the map file to its current directory to a cache file like cache.tmp. After the decompression, scroll up the shown log and you will find where exactly the decompressed file was stored.
- Rename the cache file to xxx.map. The cache file is not deleted when SparkEdit is closed, so you can cut and move it as you want.
- Open the xxx.map file with Halo Map Tools.
- In the treeview, look for an item called "[mode] Model (Xbox)".
- After expanding this item, you can select the object you want to export. A message appears and you can now select the mesh from the the list on the right and export it. When your system is decoding numbers in a different way than xxxx, xxxx.xxxx (e.g. Germany) change your systems "Regional Options" (Control Panel) to "English" before starting Malo Map Tools, otherwise you will get useless .OBJ files. If nothing helps, open the .OBJ file with a really fast text-editing program like "Microsoft Word" and replace all , with . .
- OBJ importers are listed at the bottom.
I hope this will help those who did not know and those who do not want to explain it anymore.
greetings
Daniel
