it would requre some nasty editing that I dont know how to do, and doubt that you would be capable of.

no offense intended in any way.

well, even I dont really know how to do this, and I've been here for a while... the point is that you would have to create meta for it, and that wouldn't be fun.

help with Photoshop and skinning

Post by powerpak »

Whenever I make a skin for the warthog I can only see it when I am up close, and next to it. I was wondering what the hell the deal is, I plan to try some other coloring methods, like color burn, but to let you know I am using photoshop 7.0 and I used normal fill color to change the skin, but it still only shows up when you are standing next to it, I have NTSC xbox. In sparkedit it shows up how I want it but on the xbox, you have to stand next to it to see any color.
Thanks
P.S. I will go through the search function of the forums, and the tutorials again, just to recap what I know.

whats up is, when you were skinning the warthog you must of only skinned the big picture of the warthog, as you see when your skinning theres 1 big pic then smaller then smaller etc, that is the views of the warthog, ya know? so basically what ever you do to the big pic of the warthog you gota do to the rest of the pics
kapish  ?

I thought there was an option somewhere where it created mipmaps from the big one you edited... isn't there an option for that in PS? I could've sworn...
Just tell me you love me and this will all be over.

yeah, I know

i figured that, but every time I tell it to generate MIP maps it makes the image all f*d up. It has the original MIP maps and the generated ones, also, whenever I was playing it with the new skin on my xbox (NTSC), the warthog looked like shreds of metal, and you could see through parts of it, (it looked like someone took a chainsaw to it.) Until you are standing next to it. I am kinda mad at it but that is the fun of expirementing and finding a solution, if you guys can give me some answers I would muchly appreciate it. Perhaps even release a good tutorial with pics for xbox only skinning.THANKS

here is a short and unrevised tutorial

Post by powerpak »

get the map you want from the xbox through FTP. Then with HMTv3 (what I have) load your map. For this example I will use bloodgulch xbox NTSC. Once the map is loaded click the "bitm" section, scroll down to vehicles/warthog/warthog. click it. It should show some meta info and a small picture of something that looks like a warthog. Now click on save texture. save it to a known location on your HDD. Then open up PS 7.0 (what I have) (make sure you have the .dds plugin) then goto open from the file menu. Find your warthog texture you saved, and open it. it will ask if you want to view MIP maps and tell you to use existing MIP maps in the save menu. Ignore this by clicking no (do not view MIP maps) Then when you are done editing your warthog, click save (or save as, I like to keep a backup of the original) from the file menu. It will bring up the window and ask you where to save it if you clicked "save as", once you chose the save location then it will show another menu that says nvidia on it. Do not mess with anything here except where it says MIP maps, click generate MIP maps, then click the pull down menu that says "ALL" and click "7". then you can preview your new skin with the generated MIP maps by clicking "2d preview", once you are done looking at it close the "2d preview" window, if you chose to open it, and click save.
DONE
I will submit a better tutorial with pictures later, maybe this week or early next week.
