i just got a chip for my box so im new to xbox modding, so ive got one question, can someone explain this whole comress, decompress thing to me, and cach maps?

Will firstoff, are you at the point of being able to mod maps... Do you have a new bios? How about a dashboard? If your new and you say that i just got a chip, that sort of tells us that you dont know where to begin, so i gave some pointers

no i got the whole xbox stuff figured out, i am just used to how the pc maps work, i just wanted to know how the xbox ones do cuz they are apparently different, like having bitmaps and sounds stored in the actual map.

the maps that are on the Halo CD are "compressed". When you play a halo map, it decompresses the map, copying it to a cache partition on the Hard Drive.
So, the cache is referring to the decompressed map, which you modify, unless you have Halo loaded on the HDD and then you can modify the compressed maps, then your mod won't go away when you play another 3 levels (there are 3 MP cache files available, when all 3 are filled up it overwrites them)

does the map need to be uncompressed to mod it? say i wanted to put sentenels in the map, this could not be done to a compressed map correct?

When u normally play halo, the map u play is taken from the cd where it is compressed, and then decompressed into ur cache partition.
if u want to play a map, you have to take it from ur computer and then and put it in the cache partition.
then select the map u wabt to play from ur halo screen. (if u modded bloogulch, then select BG from ur halo dash.)
ur xbox THINKS that the modded BG is the REAL BG and loads that because it has the same filename.
about the textures/sounds in one file, ask someone else.... my xbox DIED before i could do ANY mods at all...
PS WHATEVER U DOO ONLY COPY HALO TO UR HDD IF U HAVE ENUF ROOM OR UR XBOX "LL DIE LIKE MINE

ok thanks man, i have an 80 gigabyte hd in my xbox i backed up my entire computer on it and it works fine i still have 50 gigs left, but what i want to know is in order to edit the maps do they need to be decompressed? or can i just edit the maps compressed?

checkout spark edit, hek, hmt, and some more just search around damnit,
if you learned how to edit pc you should figure out xbox as well. Any way i dont mean to be an ass... if you didnt know check out the tutoriols here and at xboxscene.com.. HMT is the shit and monixide is a genious for creating it.

what the fuck.. why is cus words edited out at this site, dont be gay... I thought modding your xbox was ilegal and you put some foul language filter on here?, dude i love this site its my home page..
