swapping NMP levels for other ones

hi guys,
first of all i want to say thanks to all the dudes who dream this stuff up for the benefit of the rest of us!!!
my problem is that i have been downloading board from around these sites and i really like them and want to replace some of the boards i dont like in nmp with theses new ones. i take all the steps i think i need to edit them and get them ready to play, but they never work for me. i hate to ask for help but i have searched around for clues and experimented for about two days straight. i guess to make things clear i will outline what im doing and maybe someboday can tell me what im forgetting or screwing up.
first, i patch the original cache map (usually bg) with new map
then, hex edit to change name of board i want to replace in nmp
next, compress with sparkedit
finally i give the new compressed map the same name as the old map i am replacing (rat race, pris, wiz, ect.)
then ftp to the box
when i go to play, i always get the disk dirty message
any help you give me in any way, big or small will be greatly appreciated
thanks,
jon
