Hooray! I finally.... oh crap. Help!

Post by WhiteNinja »

:?: So... uh... yeah. Well I just bought my Xbit and installed it. Yipee! However, I turned it on, and all that happened was it just turned off and on again and then the red/green light started blinking. Nothing showed up on the screen, and I'm positive that the cords are all plugged in correctly and fully. Do I have to mess with the DIP switches? Any feedback on this would be supertastic. (I'm pretty sure that not's a word but whatever. :D)

Also, I'm afraid after reading many tutorials, I am still sketchy on "flashing" BIOS and "FTPing" files to my xbox. Actually, I don'te even know what "BIOS" and "FTP" stands for or what their significance is. Man, I am such a n00b. But hey, everyone has to start somewhere right? Plus when I get going, I have some really great ideas that I'd like to try to contribute to this site. So any help would be great. (And PLEASE don't flame me and just gimme a link to a tut. I've been getting that a lot lately on every other site I try.)

P.S. - EvolutionX? ".iso?" Oh god...

Well on www.xbox-scene.com are some fine tutorials about ftp and bioses.
Try searching their, or on their forums. They will be able to help you out.
You could also try the tutorial section here at halomods:
http://files.halomods.com/viewtopic.php?t=8138
or this one: http://www.halomods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12363

Well thank you for your feedback, but I'd really like someone to post something like this (i.e. no links to tuts):

BIOS - (definition goes here)
(why this is significant goes here)

FTP - (def)
(significance)

Flashing - (same as above)

thx, im such a n00b

Well I messed with the DIP switches and got my xbox to boot up and go to the normal dashboard. Yay! It's not fried! Now I just have to load up EvoX, which is a hefty task by itself. Oh well, here goes nothing...

Oh yeah, one more question:

If I load some BIOS onto my xbox (let's assume I do it correctly), and I boot up the Xbox using those BIOS, will something different happen than the box just doing what it normally does (go to the regular dash)? I remember seeing one time that the words "Matrix Inside" flashed up on the screen when some guys box was booting up. Anything like that supposed to happen with my Xbit if I put in the EvoX M8 BIOS?

ok thx for that info. Now I'd just like to know one more thing:

Hex editors!

I think this is something to do with how you actually make the modifications to Halo and such. However, I dont have any idea how to work these things, and how to get my files to the hex editor that i have. Even if i got them there, all that shows up is a crapload of numbers and gibberish that i have no clue how to understand.

And what is sparkedit?

thx you guys have been a HUGE help and im almost ready (finally) to make some mods! yay!

Well in the NMP file download section is a tutorial from UltraMagnus
"My own NMP" This shows you how to use a hex editor.

And sparkedit is a kick ass program that lets you see the things you injected, and move them around the level. It also can compres/uncompress maps. And you're able to copy scenery, so you can make a forest for example. If you wanna make mods you definately need sparkdedit 3.02. Its in the utilities section

Cool cool. Well I took apart my xbox and tightened up some screws in the old Xbit section, and now the xbox boots without any trouble. Maybe that was my problem in the first place. Hmmm. Oh well. Anyway, I got some great tutorials of xbox-scene.com on how to make an .iso, but I just need a few things cleared up:

1. About how big should the final ISO file be? I added my dummy files but the final ISO is still only like 2 mb. Should I keep adding stuff to the ISO or will my xbox read that ok?

2. Let's just make sure that I got the correct files into the ISO
-evoxdash.xbe
-EvolutionX Build 3935
-evox.ini
-dummy file

That's all that I need to put into my ISO, right? Also, I'm using Qwix to create it. It doesn't really matter what program I use right?

Here is my definitions for you.

BIOS-The software that is burned into a chip on the xbox that tells what games can be run as well as the settings for various pieces of the xboxes hardware. A modchip will replace this with w/e bios you flash to the chip.

FTP-Stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a way to...transfer files between your xbox(or any PC with FTP) and your PC.

Hex editors are programs that let you edit the raw data of a file. This is a way of editing halo files(not the easiest but some things can only be done with them and not actual hacking programs)

Spark Edit is a program that opens your Halo maps and lets you view the land as well as reposition vehicles, weapons, pieces of scenery, spawn points, King of the hill hills, where the flags are placed etc. Very useful program.

And other programs as well.

Wow, Spammy. That was probably the most helpful post so far. Thx for the info! (UCC you're still my main source, thx!)

My next question is what is a cache file? (I plan on making some sort of small reference/tutorial that has all the technical modding terms in it, so if you have any that you want to share and define, post here and I'll include you when I give credit for my tut/ref. Thx!)
