How to write halo programs in java

hi, i know most of java but i dont know were to start writting halo programs in it. i know maps are just compressed files using (i think) zlib. would anyone mind telling me how i should start this with java?

Only the halo 1 xbox maps are compressed using zlib. I would search for halo mutator, it is an application for halo 2 editing made in java that the source code was released for.
