Need help building stunt track

Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

Need help building stunt track

Post by eyelevel »

I want to build a stunt track that is also an obstacle course with breaks in the track, ramps, twist and maybe a loop. And at the end of the track, if you can make it, thier will be something special! Kinda like if you have ever played the interstate1982 mod for battlefield 1942.
The only problem is I suck at modeling. I want to give it a good try though. When making roads should I model them out of primitive shapes and lay them on top of the ground. Or would it be wiser to select individual vertices and move them along the z axis till I get what looks like a path. Both ways Im having trouble with but is their a prefered method to making exact paths?

Yep, there is a very easy way. Its called a loft.

Just make a rectangle that looks like a cross section of the road you want. You can even put a little lip on either side. Kinda like the ] symbol except on its side. Then create the path you want the road to go. Next create a loft :). Here is a tut on the details of lofts.

Have fun :)

How would I go about making inclines and then declines in the track? And do I have to attach the track to the box by deleting the underlying vertices as if it were a base? I assume I would but before I go and do all that...

I can't see your pic, but I think I know what you are asking.

When you create your path, using a line I hope, turn 'smooth' on under 'Creation Method'. Remeber the shape you created will follow the path exactly, so if you put inclines and declines in the path it will translate to the loft object that is created.

Or you could just select all the vertices at a joint and move them up and down to do it. But it would be smoother the other way.

You cant just have objects floating around not attached to something. What I would do is just attach each end of the track to the level wherever the track begins and ends. Do it like you would attach a base to the level. But of course you could attach the whole thing, but that could take awhile. Take a look at the Boolean modifier, it should be able to do it for you in one step :D

Good Luck !
