it is a good example from the kick ass game "The Chronicles of Riddick" which i highly recommend buying or renting. this will explain the main differences between normal mapping and bump mapping.

those are good examples, why doesn't everyone use poly-bump mapping then?

because bump mapping sucks. Bump mapping is the easy way out, it makes less work for the 3d people and ore for the 2d which I think is sutpid...
